Photo Friday

by Michael Chandler

Welcome to the weekend my friends!  Got a couple of photos from the last Lap Battle/NASA weekend for you to enjoy.  Downloading remains the same: right click (or control click if you’re on a Mac) then view image, right click again and save image.  Then set it as your desktop background and make all of your friends/co-workers/classmates/cats jealous!

Remember a couple of years ago when I followed Kris McCoy and Randy Gibb during Honda Challenge?  Well, since then Randy has tried selling his DC5 and Kris has started racing in a S2000.  I saw Kris at the Enduro and snapped a few shots, but this is the first time I’ve seen them racing together in a while.  Just like old times.

This pretty much sums up Lap Battle: M3, fun track day car; S2000, fun track day car; gutted STi, weapon of terror.  They are turning into Release, which spits you out onto the front straight.  Guess what happened next.

Yes SiR: Honda Integra SiR-G

by Michael Chandler

We all face dilemmas: what am I going to have for lunch?  Should I put on pants today?  Whatever, but some of us have more unique problems.  Problems like: should I drive my VIP RL or my right hand drive Integra?  Omar had this problem, and he chose the Integra.

This Accord Integra comes straight from Japan, where we can only assume it lived a decent life.  It then came here, where dreams come true and everything is set up for the LHD life.  Not deterred, Omar began making this slightly used ’97 Integra his.

The first thing you notice about this DC2, other than the steering wheel being on the wrong side, are the bright white 16×8 Gab Sports wheels.  Those white wheels have black Falken Azenis tires mounted on them, and the whole wheel/tire combo is mounted on 4×114 Integra Type R hubs!  Those hubs came with the brakes and all the other what-have-you you get (except for the lower control arms!  Those are BLOX pieces) when you pull them off of an ITR.  Holding the car up, or keeping it down, are a set of Raceland coilovers.  Rounding out the suspension set up is an ASR subframe brace, which stiffens the rear and looks mighty fine while doing so.

The next things you’ll see when perusing the car are the little body accents that have been fitted.  Small, hardly noticeable things such as the Backyard Special front bumper and Carbon/Kevlar lip or the replica Mugen generation two spoiler or the OEM Honda window visors, side skirts and rear valences.  These, minute details pale in comparison to the pronounced carbon fiber hood and Integra Type R headlights.  To be frank, if you didn’t know what you were looking for you would think that this is how they come stock.

So we have established that it looks pretty, but how does it get along?  Is it still rocking the B18C mill it brought with it on the boat ride over?  Does it have some obnoxious, straight pipe exhaust?  Is there anything else under the hood besides the vin tag and radiator cap?!?  Allow me to answer all these questions, starting with the last one: yes.

The 1.8L VTEC mill has been replaced with a new hybrid motor!  A K24 block has been fitted with a K20 head and has been jammed under the hood.  Air conditioning and power steering did not make it under the hood, but a Karcepts A/C and power steering delete kit did.  The OEM intake manifold and throttle body are being used elsewhere (doorstop?) because Skunk2 pieces have replaced them.  The old fuel rail has also been turned into a giant comb upgraded to a Golden Eagle piece.  An SSR header exits to a 3 inch APEX’i exhaust now for a few reasons, but mostly because this whole setup is more powerful and sounds better.  A pair of Drive Shaft Shop axles get the power to the wheels, allowing this whole thing to get to moving.

Inside the cabin is where the magic happens!  Or it would have if this shoot of ours didn’t get rained out.  While I cant show you, I can tell you.  You sit in red Recaro seats, while Takata harnesses hold you firmly in place.  You grip a Personal steering wheel attached to a NRG quick release hub, and you change gears with a Circuit Hero shift knob atop the stock shifter wrapped in an ITR shift boot.  Your feet, when not on the pedals, rest upon ITR floor mats.

And there you have it.  A man was faced with a dilemma, and after some coaxing, he made the decision to drive his other awesome car that day.  Now should I have a can of frosting for lunch?..

NASA Racing and HPDE

by Michael Chandler

In addition to the NASA sanctioned racing going on (which brought out all of the Snows and Magnus Racing’s 996 911 Cup car) they also threw a little HPDE session which brought out it’s own awesome collection of vehicles: an NA1 NSX, R35 GTR, STi swapped GC Impreza, and a pair of Mustang Cobras.

The HPDE group quickly made way for the NASA race groups, which dispatched with the pleasantries and got down to racing.  Now, a quick aside about Martin Snow’s Porsche (the white and blue one) and the Magnus car: from what I’ve heard they aren’t elligible to compete for points.  Technically they qualified first and second, but as far as the actual points race went first place qualifier was Madison Snow, then Melanie, then George Smith in the yellow C5 Corvette.  That didn’t stop the non-qualifiers from turning fast laps.

Lap Battle! April 21

by Michael Chandler

Twas a busy weekend at Miller: bikes were racing on the west course, karts were running and Lap Battle and NASA racing/HPDE were happening on the east course.  I was running around, dealing with the latter as best I could.  Lret’s talk about Lap Battle now, then after lunch (but before you go home from work) we’ll talk about the NASA stuff.  Deal?

Zane didn’t make it out this weekend, but it was ok because there was another insanely fast car running around: a 996 911 Cup car.  It proceeded to dominate.

That little red Cobalt you see?  From what I hear it’s running 20lbs of boost and was keeping pace with Shawn’s beast.  Speaking of Shawn…

He had a leak in his water/meth system.  This was a problem that resulted in a good quote (“Where can I buy some meth?”) and an ingenious solution: top off the tank with water and run race gas.  It worked, and Shawn ran well.

A Craftsman Truck Series-esqe truck showed up for a little bit, but then it decided it didn’t want to run anymore and initiated its self destruct sequence.  That brought the session to an end.

Photo Friday

by Michael Chandler

Is it Friday already?  Sweet!  That means tomorrow I’ll be out at Miller Motorsports Park for Lap Battle and NASA racing tomorrow!  It also means two new wallpapers for you to download and stare at lovingly!  As always: right click, view image, save image

The UtahHondas.net meet brought out over 500 cars, including this pair of Evos.  It’s always nice seeing Mitsubishi’s rally box out and about, and it’s even better when you can see two generations parked next to each other like these two.

This is an upcoming feature, but I like the photo so much I’m dropping it early.  The shoot got rained out, but we got this Integra SiR shot in the nick of time!

Cars and Coffee Irvine 04/07/2012

by Trent

While in Long Beach covering the Formula Drift event, I made the wise decision to wake up at 5am and go to the Irvine, CA cars and coffee event. It is a car guy rite of passage. I talked briefly with Michael who was visiting from Chicago and came out to see the cars too. This is unlike your ordinary cars and coffee(unless you live around Irvine of course), the cars are rare and exquisite.

We also teamed up with [func-shun] to bring you this video.

This place had heavily modified GT-R’s, sure. But does your cars and coffee have a Vector M12 or Spyker C8?
Vector M12
Spyker C8
On this occasion, Porsche was the featured marque to honor the late Ferdinand Alexander “Butzi” Porsche. This gave them a special section of parking right by the coffee. And there were no shortage of Porsches.

Formula Drift 2012: Round 1

by Trent

Lexus SC430 Drift car

I was fortunate enough recently to go to the first round of the 2012 Formula Drift season in Long Beach. And it was an exciting one! There were 19 rookies competing for a spot, 5 of whom made it into the Round of 32. Ken Gushi also debuted his Greddy Scion FR-S. And Dai Yoshihara, the defending champ returned.

The track takes place on turns 9, 10, and 11 of the Long Beach Grand Prix course. These turns might have a bit of a texture difference come next weeks race compared to the other turns.

Rhys Millen Hyundai Genesis drift

Rubber was being shred at every opportunity. In the Round of 16, Rhys Millen messed up a drift and took out his anger on the rear tires of his Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

Long Beach Formula Drift 2012
The battles were hard-fought and there were more than a few crashes throughout practice. However, when the dust and tire debris settled, the winner was crowned. In 3rd place was the rookie Daigo Saito in the Lexus SC430, 2nd place went to Dai Yoshihara in his Nissan 240SX, and the winner, Justin Pawlak in a Ford Mustang! We can’t wait to watch the next round and we will return to as many of these events as we can.

Photo Friday

by Michael Chandler

Hooray for Friday and a holiday weekend!  Right now it’s snowing (boo!) but here are a pair of photos from the sunshine filled weekend at Miller Motorsports Park

When it comes to track days, there are few more useful tools than the Ariel Atom.  Aluminum tubing, an engine (either a Honda sourced K series or the absolutely insane Hartley built V8, which is two Suzuki Hayabusa 4 cylinders fused together), a transmission, seats, and the other bare necessities needed to declare it a car.  Despite those necessities, this one is loaded into a trailer and towed down to Miller Motorsports Park so it can play with other track day toys.

While the Atom is a nice track day toy, a dedicated E92 M3 race car is…well, it’s a race car.  All the nice things that make the M3 a fun street car (414hp 4 Liter V8, 51/49 weight distribution, 6 speed manual) are cranked up to 11 in race trim.  This puppy came from Colorado to participate in the enduro, and despite whatever problems it had, it sounded and looked amazing coming down The Attitudes.
