Drifting at MMP

by Michael Chandler

We’re not quite done with the madness that was happening at Miller weekend before last. After Lap Battle and the NASA races wrapped up attention swung towards the paddock, where all the noise and smoke was coming from. I briefly set up shop behind some plastic barriers, which was awesome until someone got a little too close and shot all the barriers at me. I then moved myself over to the other side of the course, then settled in with the peanut gallery which consisted of Dave, Joey, and other Trent. As the competition began we started throwing out hashtags. Here’s some of the highlights:

#thebirdman.  “And I don’t even like hashtags” – Dave.  That’s Jordan “The Birdman” Collier

#symmetricalrearwheeldrive Derrick Lopez’s RWD STi drift monster proving that 2 > 4 is sound math

#yasha Yasha was killing it, but he never touched the wall despite the fact that pieces of his bumper were hanging off

#sometimesmiataistheanswer Nick Stucky and the dude with the massive wing were proving that Miatas can be something other than cone dodgers.

There was a lot more going on, which is why there’s a 50 photo gallery going on right below this!

Lap Battle July 28

by Michael Chandler

LapBattle.com Time Attack was out and running about seventeen seconds slower than the NASA race groups, but it was to be expected.  They also were running with HPDE Group 3, which was interesting.

Sally was excited to get out there!  Especially AFTER she got her hands on some slightly used tires to replace the new tires that she won.  Her beau Shawn wasn’t in much better shape, he was having boost issues and was essentially running on wastegate pressure.  That issue allowed Max, the guy in the silver Evo, to take make it past Shawn.

The Stock vehicles were out, and were cleaning up.  The S10 was hitting the corners pretty hard, and the Charger was expressing its dominance pretty much everywhere.

The JDM Legends/Solid Autoworks/Rally Sport Direct WRX was out, and again was having its issues. Last month it was bending brake pads, this time it was having a hard time keeping hoses clamped on.  Could be worse, that black Viper ended up sounding like an old tractor by the end of the day. But that wasn’t the worst outcome.

Allan, owner of everyone’s favorite yellow Datsun 510, broke his AE86 Corolla!  Miraculously he pulled off track right in front of me.  He wasn’t too thrilled about the situation, but he wasn’t exactly devastated by it either.

It was another solid event put on by Matt, Biggie and everyone else.  Next month (August) they will be racing on the 18th on the West Course, so come out and see some big speeds or register yourself and get out there for yourself.

NASA Racing and HPDE

by Michael Chandler

Twas a busy wekend at Miller.  The Euro SL,UT fest was going on in the paddock, drifting eventually got going later in the day, and on the main stage (all four and a half miles of it) were your NASA Race groups, HPDE and LapBattle.com Time Attack sessions.  The fields for the NASA race groups were stacked and rather competitive.

Open wheel featured a deeper field, which skewed toward more action which was nice.

HPDE Groups 1 & 2 featured a nice diversity.  A Factory Five Racing Mk4 Roadster shared the track with the former COBB Tuning Time Attack R35 GT-R (the car now belongs to a Race Co. customer who also owns another R35 GT-R), a pair of C6 Corvettes and a 993 911.

Race Groups 1 & 2 were lumped together, which meant the Porshces and Corvettes would encounter traffic made up of Miatas and one EF Civic hatchback.  This didn’t stop the pink and white Snow Porsche from turning three minute laps.  Also of note: George Smith annihilated his right front tire and fender well in the morning session, which forced him to fabricate a new fender well before the heat race.

Euro SL,UT Fest 2012

by Trent

euroslutfest 2012
This was no sophmore slump. In its second year, Euro SL,UT Fest came out bigger and better than last year with more cars and some of our favorites.
Lamborghini Countach Euro SL,UT Fest
Some heavy hitters also attended with a couple Lamborghini’s, a Ferrari, and 2 Audi R8’s. Not bad for a euro show, let alone in Utah.

We had a great time out at the track which coincided with Lap Battle, NASA, and Drifting(more on this later this week). We look forward to next year’s event.

Check out the pictures below.
