We’re Drifting TONIGHT!!!

by Michael Chandler

SCD August 2 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-46

YYYEEEEAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!  It’s finally happening!  From 5pm until midnight, see local heroes, Scoundrels, some Not Very Good guys, and whoever else shows up slide around the bowl at Rocky Mountain Raceways.  It’s gonna be a hell of a time, and you should come out to it.

SCD August 2 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-20

Originally I had planned on writing a long post about how you can’t set out to create an underground scene, and that something can’t be underground if you create a public Facebook event for it, then invite a ton of people to said “underground” event.  And I was going to say something about how the street scene, for better or worse, will never die.  And in a way, it shouldn’t.  I was also going to throw out a “Golden Ticket”, but I didn’t work out the logistics and I have a sneaking suspicion that whoever’s car wouldn’t pass tech.  Such is life in the mean streets.  But instead of an 800+ word column, you get this sub 300 word invite to come join us tonight!

SCD August 2 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-29

Who knows?  You might come away with an awesome prize!*  To review: Tonight, Rocky Mountain Raceways, 5PM until Midnight, in the oval.  Be there, you babies.

Where They Stand: Time Trial Standings

by Michael Chandler

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 TT Winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-4

Now it’s time to take a look at the Time Trial standings.  There aren’t nearly as many classes in TT, but there are plenty of close battles.  Like TTE!  Paul Mitchell, the most fabulous Miata of them all, sits atop the class with Tyler Nisonger 40 points behind.  How is this going to shake out?  Well, back in third is Ben Lamberson.  He’s 70 points down, but definitely not out.  It’s a long season, and that’s not an insurmountable gap.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 TT Winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-7

Trevor Pope is sitting atop TTD, riding high on three straight wins.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Saturday Winners Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -5

TTC didn’t have a single competitor last weekend, so Tom Rogers is still leading the group.

NASA Utah TTB Points Leader Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1

New Miata owner, and fella with a jaunty last name, Darin Beaudoin is sitting atop TTB, with Adam Hurdman 100 point behind him in second place.

NASA Utah TT3 Points Leader Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1

One of the BRZ/FRS drivers to step up to TT3 was Andy Moench, and he finds himself in first place.  Another driver who made the jump is Mike Bratsch, who currently sits in second place.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 TT Winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-3

Shawn Murphy and his “street car” are 45 points ahead of the Makes & Models 911 GT3.  The 911 is tied with the Pink Ribbon Racing BRZ, which is getting some fresh new rubber.  Shawn is throwing on some new sideskirts and fender flares for the next round, so this weekend is going to be interesting.

352A1254 (Medium)

David Gilliland and his bright orange Viper are leading the way in TT1.  Nice to see that bright, menacing thing running around and winning.

Rainbow (Medium)

At the end of the rainbow is an Italian/German race car driven by a collection of talent that used to drive a German race car.  That would be Makes & Models and their shiny new Huracan ST.  They have a 20 point lead over Wade Hall in TTU.  If you were to take in to account the wins Makes & Models scored when they took their old R8 LMS out for Round 1, they’d have a 220 point lead over Wade.  Regardless, Makes & Models is still learning the car while Wade is sharpening his driving skills.  This one could get interesting.

Where They Stand: Race Group Standings

by Michael Chandler

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Lightning Winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-5

Two rounds down, and a third quickly approaching, now is a good time to take a look at the points standings.  Today we’re going to look at the Thunder and Lightning groups, and we’re going to start in GTS2.  In the above photo, we have the class leader Chris Haunold.  He’s currently 90 points ahead of Ed Mineau, and 110 ahead the other guy in the picture: Tom Rogers.

NASA Utah GTS3 Points Leader Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1

Consistency is key, and in GTS3 Mark Reichman has consistently finished in second place in both of the races he’s run this season.  Fortunately for him, he’s the only driver to run both races. With 180 points, he’s 80 points ahead of both Jeff Burton and Doug Turnquist.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 teasers Old Rotary Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -1

Nathan Rohner is still the only PTB driver.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 TT Winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-4

PTE is a very tight race, with Ben Lamberson nipping at the heels of Todd Green.  Only 35 points separate the two, but I wouldn’t count out Randy Cummings.  He’s a late comer to the class, but he had some solid finishes at the last race weekend.  He’s 205 points down, BUT if Todd and Ben have a few missteps he could be right in this thing.

352A5112 (Medium)

Spec Boxster is a thing, and Mark Boschert is in the lead.  He’s also the only driver in class.  But just look at that Boxster!  Sharp.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Lightning Winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-2

Spec Miata is looking to be a hotly contested class.  Currently less than 100 points separates the class leader, Chris Bond, from 4th place, Craig Shane.  Call the cars whatever you want, but this class is going to be one to watch all season.  Don’t be surprised if we see the top of the class get shuffled several times.

Spec Z is the tightest race in the Lightning group, with Arthur Golebiowski a mere 10 points ahead of Tom Kaminski.  The gap from first to 5th place is 43 points!  That means everyone in the top 5 has to be on their game every race to have a chance at knocking Arthur off the top spot.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-1

Russ Timmons is by his lonesome in GTS5.  Someone buy a 997 911 and join him.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Saturday Winners Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -17

Darrell Troester is barely holding off Byron Smith in GTS4.  The gap was cut from 110 to 10 last race weekend when Darrell no-showed, which let Byron claim an easy class win.  How will this shake out?  Only time will tell!

NASA Utah ST3 Points Leader Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1

Us Against One Racing, comprised by any number of your favorites (Todd Ainsworth, Alex Whetman, Grimace), is clinging to a 5 point lead in ST3.  5 points!!!  That’s currently the tightest race in any of the race group classes!  Figuratively glued to the banana yellow bumper of the M3 is Frank Gannett in the #93 Ford Performance Racing School BOSS 3o2RS, and James Harrell is right behind him in the #87 FPRS Mustang!  This is ridiculous, and also fun.  So let’s keep this up.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-3

J.R. Smith is the lone ST2 driver.  Someone buy a… something and join him.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Saturday Winners Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -16

Bob Evans is atop the ST1 ladder in the Snickers Ford Fusion.  We gotta come up with some more sponsors for him.  I want to put at least three back slashes in when I write about his car.  Let’s figure this out, people!

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-5

Super Unlimited is being dominated by the Air Power GT3R’s.  They currently have a 225 point lead, and four consecutive wins in class.

NASA Utah GTSU Points Leader Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1

And we finally arrive at GTSU, where McKay Snow (smile damnit!) is atop the field that includes a few Super Trofeo spec Lamborghini Huracans and a the other 911 GT3R.  He’s 30 points ahead of the Makes & Models Huracan ST, which may or may not last.  The Makes & Models team is figuring out that Lamborghini, and McKay may get called up for a ride this season.  He’s got the talent, and people need drivers.  Either way, prepare to watch a battle in the unlimited class of the German Touring Series.

CORRECTION: Arthur Golebiowski is currently leading the Spec Z championship, not Chad Aalders.  The article has been changed to show Arthur in the lead.

There’s A New Top Gear Trailer

by Michael Chandler

And it looks…  It looks like Top Gear.  It’s got some crazy escapades like chop top Reliant Robins and paintball with a Corvette Z06 and a Viper ACR.  It’s got supercars, and accents, and a tame racing driver.  I’m looking forward to seeing it.  I’m going to withhold judgement on it until I see a few episodes though.

Looking Forward To The Next One

by Michael Chandler

SCD 2016 Schedule June 3

Well, there WAS supposed to be drifting on May 6th, but Mother Nature had different plans.  The event WAS going to be rescheduled, but there were scheduling conflicts.  So, if you want to get your drift fix, plan on coming to Rocky Mountain Raceways on June 3rd!

We Had Friends at Road Atlanta for GTA

by Michael Chandler

And I’ll be damned if they didn’t do well.  Cole, in the Sydney GTR’s first event on American soil, went out and ran a 1:21.258 which got him second place in the Unlimited AWD class.

Vincent Meyer NASA Utah Round 1 NASA Utah Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1

And Vincent Meyer was along for his first GTA event.  He was in the Unlimited AWD class as well, and clocked a best time of 1:32.961. Not bad for his first time out!

Christopher Stone NASA Utah Round 1 NASA Utah Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1

Christopher Stone went in out in the pink accented Spec Z for Unlimited RWD, and pulled out a 1:38.115.  Considering he was in a car built to a very specific rule book for sprint racing, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he didn’t finish at the top of the heap against cars built to lay down one flying lap.

Lap Battle HPDE3-5

And in Street AWD was a blast from the past: Sally McNulty!  She turned a 1:37.823 and took home third place!

We’re super stoked for our friends, that they’re out there doing awesome things like running in GTA, World Time Attack, Pike’s Peak, Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup, Super Trofeo, Formula D, World Challenge, and some other series that I know I’m forgetting.  We’re lucky to have such awesome friends, and we hope they keep having success.

We’re Drifting This Friday!

by Michael Chandler

SCD August 2 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-46

DRIFTING IN A LEGAL* SENSE IS BACK THIS FRIDAY!!!  From 5PM to Midnight (gasp!) the Salt City Drift guys and girls and other pronouns will be kicking off their season in the bowl at Rocky Mountain Raceways!  There will be solo runs, and tandem!  And a competition!  Yes, I said competition.

SCD August 2 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-9

See local heroes take solo and tandem runs, all while trying to get their hands on that sweet sponsor money.  Who is that sponsor?  O’Reilly’s Auto Parts.  How much money?  A $100 gift card.  When is this happening?  Around 10pm.

SCD August 2 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-20

That’s not a bad way to start a season.  Come on out, enjoy some drifting!  It’ll be fun!

**I say legal, because I know what kind of hooligans some of you are.  Just a friendly reminder: being a renegade in the streets is acceptable for skateboarding, but not for drifting.  Don’t street drift, and we won’t make fun of you when you mess up your car after learning a valuable, albeit hard, lesson.

It’s Monday, So Let’s Look at the Race Group Standings

by Michael Chandler

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Saturday Winners Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -6

But at least it’s race week!  With that in mind, let’s take a look at how the point standings look:

In Super Unlimited the leader is the #41 Porsche of Air Power Racing.  Easy to do when you’ve got a very recently campaigned 911 GT3R.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Saturday Winners Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -15

Spec Z has DXDT racing in the lead, with Arthur Golwbiowski and Tom Kaminski hot on their heels.  Right now only 55 points separate first in class from last.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Saturday Winners Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -10

The one, and only, Chris Bond is in first in Spec Miata.  I would keep an eye on Matt Williamson, second in class, this season.  He could very well come up and take the season title.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Saturday Winners Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -7

Dan McKeever and one of the Ford Performance Racing School Mustangs are holding onto first place in ST2, with the Us Against One Clothing team hot on their heels.  Noticeably absent is Mike Mielke, last year’s champion.  Will we see him this season?  Only time will tell.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Saturday Winners Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -16

ST1 is being dominated by Bob Evans, in a car that I like to say is a rejected high downforce NASCAR prototype.  Somebody needs to join Bob, preferably someone in a Chevrolet.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Saturday Winners Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -11

Todd Green is holding off Ben Lamberson in PTE, proving that Paul Mitchell is more powerful than the Lord of the Rings.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Saturday Winners Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -9

By the power of spinning Doritos, Nathan Rohner has locked down PTB.  Someone, anyone, I beg of you: build a Z car and face off against Nathan.  We need that classic battle to play out, for the good of humanity.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Saturday Winners Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -19

McKay Snow is on top in GTSU, with Makes & Models and DXDT Racing in a tie for second place.  With Makes & Models fiddling around with a new car, and DXDT getting into the Lamborghini Super Trofeo series, this one could belong to the kid.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Saturday Winners Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -17

Darrell Troester in his white 996 GT3 Cup car have a commanding lead over Byron Smith in GTS4, but don’t expect the chasm to grow.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Saturday Winners Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -8

GTS2 has a pair of classic 911’s atop the class, but Ed Mineau has a 110 point lead in his black Porsche.

And that’s the current standings in the various classes in the Race Group.  In another post we’ll look at the TT standings, but right now digest the race group standings.  Come out this weekend, and be able to look at the battles on the West Track and say to yourself “Oh, this has championship implications”.

Mazda Patented A New Rotary Design

by Michael Chandler

JDM Trio shoot FD Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-25

Yup, the engine eagerly awaited since whenever the FD went away is coming back.  Maybe.  Here are the details of the patent filing, but what does this mean?  Well, they did show off that RX-Vision concept, but that doesn’t mean anything.  Manufacturers build concepts all the time, and they file patents just to keep everyone’s hands off of something they’ve had their hands on for years.  Ford and Chevrolet renew or get new copyrights for popular nameplates that haven’t been attached to a vehicle in decades, that doesn’t mean that we’re going to see a new Chevelle or Bronco anytime soon.

JDM Trio shoot FC Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-17

I love RX-7’s, and I don’t hate the RX-8, but I don’t think we’re going to see a rotary renaissance anytime soon.  Mazda is a small manufacturer, and they already have a sports car: the Miata.  Creating a new platform for a new rotary would cost a ton of money, and modifying something to swallow it would also carry a hefty bill.  It’s cool that they’ve done something with the spinny Dorito motor, even if it is turning it upside down.  I’d love for them to prove me wrong though.

We’re Going to be at ISS This Weekend!

Jetta Sport Wagen CAMautoMag Michael Chandler 2014 (1 of 10)

Unfortunately Ronda won’t be there, but we’ve locked down a pretty sweet car to represent us: Nik Preusser’s Jetta Sportwagen.  He’s made some changes to it since last we saw it, and from what we’ve seen it’s looking really good.  We can’t wait for the show, and we’re stoked that Nik is going to be representing us this year!
