What Are YOU Watching?

by Michael Chandler

top gear usa

Seriously.  I am beyond curious what you folks watch on TV, Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, Hulu… Porn Hub, whatever you watch.  Normally, I’d expect to be deafened by everyone shouting “Top Gear!” at me, but since we’re between iterations I’m not sure that’s the case anymore.

As I’m writing this, I’m watching an episode of Fast N’ Loud.  Not my favorite show, but not the worst thing to have on in the background.  I’ve also been watching Diesel Brothers, which follows the exploits of the local boys at DieselSellerz.com.  Again, not my favorite but not the worst thing you could be watching.  That might be either version of Street Outlaws.  There is no doubt in my mind that they actually street race, but the product they’re putting out is not that.*

And in the bookcase next to my TV is quite the collection of DVDs.  There are a few old Best Motoring Internationals hanging out, and an ever growing stack of JDM OPTION!s .  While on the subject of sweet media from Japan, I’ve got an external hard drive that contains Initial D in its entirety, as well as a little series called Wangan Midnight and a ton of Maximum Tune.

So what are you guys watching?  Let us know in the comments.

What Car Would You Take Racing?

by Michael Chandler

Pirelli World Challenge Ford Grand Prix of Utah day 1 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-87

I HAVE A QUESTION: If I were to hand you the necessary skills and budget, what would be your chassis of choice for sports car racing?  Ask any driver looking for a seat, and they’ll tell you they’ll wheel around in whatever they can get in to.  We’re not asking them.  Unless they’re reading this, which would be cool.  Hello unidentified pro drivers!  Glad to have you along!  Anyway…

This question is directed at us, the laymen.  Those who have an appreciation for racing, but probably couldn’t string together two good laps if our lives depended on it.  If you could suddenly drive like Jan Magnussen, Patrick Long, or someone else of that caliber, AND you had the budget to start and run your own team, what car would you build for your team?  Even though they’re no longer the go to chassis, my pick is going to be the Porsche 911.  Yes, it’s an affront to physics.  Yes, it’s a smashed Beetle.  BUT, Porsche has been atop the podium at the 24 Hours of Daytona 18 times, 17 times at both Le Mans and Sebring.  They have a great support system, from what I’ve seen, and odds are you wouldn’t be the only idiot new team out there in a 911.  It’s a tried and true platform, one that has been successful and continues to be.

So what’s your platform?

Why Isn’t Drifting in the X Games?

by Michael Chandler

Lexus SC430 Drift car

This weekend was full of motorsports fun.  We had F1 in Montreal, Indy at Texas Motor Speedway, Formula D in Orlando, the Isle of Man TT, and the grab bag of motorsports that is the X Games.  I watched the Formula 1 race, and I caught enough of the Formula D competition to enjoy it.  And I also watched a healthy chunk of the Super Trucks and what they call “RallyCar Racing” at the X Games, which was held at Circuit of the Americas near Austin, TX.  The trucks and the rally cars are cool, and I didn’t know this until I saw a In Review video, but they have flat track motorcycle racing now!  All awesome events, but I couldn’t help but ask myself one thing: why isn’t there drifting at the X Games?

Boise Drift Labor Day Two Day event Day 2 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag (39 of 56)Think about it, it’s a perfect fit for the X Games: it’s visually appealing, the drivers are approachable.  I’d bet you couldn’t distinguish between a crowd at a Formula D event and one at the X Games.  It would be a perfect fit, and the drift crowd would definitely stick around for a lot of the other events.  BMX, skateboarding, motocross are all part time hobbies for a lot of drift enthusiasts.  And this goes without saying: everyone loves seeing trucks jump around.  And yet here we are, no X Games drifting.  And I still don’t know why…

It’s not like there’s a lack of talent, or spectators.  Specifically in Texas, the stop at Texas Motor Speedway packs them in.  Maybe Formula D has a hang up with it?  The X Games this year were on the same weekend as round 3 of the Formula D season, but what if one or the other moved?  Formula D could still have its stop, and the X Games could have one of the more visually enticing motorsports that’s right in their wheel house.  Demographically speaking of course. The X Games drifting doesn’t have to have the full complement of drivers a normal Formula D event has.  Instead of a qualifying field that has to be whittled down to 32, they could just invite 8 or 16 drivers, set up the matches in a random draw and have them go to town.

The X Games would get another fantastic event to throw into their massive event, and drifting would be seen by a far larger audience.  Everybody wins!  Well, probably.  I’m sure the reasons are deeper than the few I’ve thrown out just now.  Do you have any ideas?

Mystery Mobiles!

by Michael Chandler

Greg Valdez spotted these camouflaged cars up in Park City today.  He was just as puzzled as we were, so we put the question of “What are we looking at?” to the people.  Being the humble media outlet we are, we ran it by someone at a slightly larger outfit.

A new Volt running around Park City?  Color us intrigued!  But then Mike Mcgrath, the features editor at Edmunds, chimed in

Interdasting…  Do we have a camouflaged CT6 plug in hybrid testing alongside a Volt on a wintry spring day?  Is it a CT6 and an ELR?  More importantly, why are they at an Allstate office?  You have any insight on this?  Comment away and enlighten us

Question: What’s the Oddest Race Car You’ve Seen?

by Michael Chandler

NASA Utah Round 3 2014 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag (124 of 148)

This question came about after I saw this Ranger/Explorer thingamajig make its third lap at Miller. It is one of the weirdest things I’ve seen take a lap (a quick lap at that), and that got me to wondering about odd racers you’ve seen.

Years ago, when GT Live was still a thing, you would see FWD time attack cars with giant wings protruding from the front. Not a splitter, not cannards, a big ole wing. It was very weird, but it did work… Sort of.

So, what’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen turn a lap in anger?  Show us in the comments. We’ll deliberate and post the weirdest. Weirdest of the weird gets a small grab bag of Hot Wheels, so bring on the strange!

Some ground rules: LeMons doesn’t count. We all love it, but the cars come from the deepest depths of insane people so they’re out. Also, bonus points if you’ve seen it with your own eyes. And post a picture so we all know what it is you’re talking about.

What is the worst car mod?

by Trent

We all like to make our cars unique and different and so sometimes we make questionable choices to modify our cars. I’m guilty of it, I once ran a rubber hose into my airbox and had a funnel on the end of it as a makeshift cold air intake. But we want to hear from you, what is the worst thing you can think of to do to your car when modifying it? Hit us up in the comments.
