A Parnelli Jones Prepped Celica Can Be Yours!

Parnelli Jones, racing legend and possibly the reason you destroyed a twelve pack of Olympia Beer that one time, did some amazing things during his career.  He damn near won the Indianapolis 500 in a turbine powered car, battled Dan Gurney in the 1970 Trans Am season to help get Ford the championship, and he started Vel’s Parnelli Jones Racing and won the Indy 500 as an owner in 1970 and 71.  VPJ also won some USAC titles, and prepped some cars for some stuff.  Stuff like this Celica GT that was used for the Celebrity/Professional race at he Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in the 80’s.

 

This 1982 Celica, as well as some others, were sent from Toyota to VPJ for modifications so as to have professional drivers like Dan Gurney, David Hobbs, and Al Unser Sr. battle on the streets of Long Beach.  The Celicas also had celebrities doing whatever it is celebrities do in these sorts of races.  Celebrities such as Caitlyn Jenner, Ted Nugent, whoever the hell Robert Hays is, and the Renegade himself: Lorenzo Lamas!

Packing a 22R, probably, this beast is putting down an ad claimed 155 horsepower!  Not sure if that’s good or bad, but this thing did get strapped to a dyno to get that number.  It has a pair of Weber carbs on it, and that’s pretty choice for something like this if you ask me.  

The interior is all business, and very much so of the time.  If you want to pick this thing up and do anything beyond historic racing, you’re gonna have to do some cage work.  And probably a lot of other work too, but keep that steering wheel for sure.  

It looks to have a fire suppression system, and a fuel cell.  Two good things to have, but two things that may have to be addressed if modern racing is in your future.  

It’s still on those sweet A60 iron cross wheels, but they’ve been wrapped in Hoosier rubber.  It has a Richmond Gear 4.10 in the pumpkin, along with a Precision Gear limited slip.  It has Eibach spring and Tokico shocks in all four corners.  Might need some refreshing, but not a bad suspension setup.

After the old girl finished being used and abused at the celebrity race, it had a curious history.  See if you can spot my issues with this telling of its history

After 1985, the car spent the next two decades at the Willow Springs International Raceway as a driving school car. The car then langished in a shed until revived and refurbished in 2003 and started competitive racing again in 2004.

See my issue?  Either someone didn’t bother proof reading the ad before throwing it on Craigslist, or this car is a low key time machine.  But it is cool that it’s done some racing since being refurbished.

A Porsche 959 Is The Ultimate Craigslist Find

Normally when a Craigslist ad is posted in the CAM staff group chat, it’s something cool but not necessarily unobtanium.  Dan, LeMons correspondent/driver, threw this in, and my God…

What you see here is a Porsche 959.  For those who don’t know: the 959 is an all wheel drive, twin turbo Porsche that was going to be the mark’s Group B entry.  But when the FIA canned the series, they took it to the Paris-Dakar Rally where in 1986 they finished 1-2.  They made a racing variant, the 961, which took first in class and seventh overall at the 1986 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

This is a Komfort version, meaning it’s a road going version.  And as you can see by this interior, it’s as 80’s tastic as your favorite episode of The Transformers.  It only has 6323 miles, and has never been restored according to the seller.

The car comes with everything: records, manuals, the original first aid kit (might not want to trust it, but definitely cool), and even a car cover!  The seller also claims that this was formerly of the Patrick collection in the UK, and received a $100k service from Porsche Classic in Germany, before coming to the US.  

If you’ve got a spare $1,250,000, this thing can be yours.  Gotta love the randomness of Craigslist.

What The Hell is This Mystery Car?

Friend of the site, and current Mustang owner, Alex Crane spotted this mystery crossover in the Arizona White Mountains.  It was towing a little trailer, and he said it looked like a Dodge.

Sorry for the potato cam photos, but that’s what we got.  Those, and questions: what the hell is this thing?  Why is it towing a trailer?  Alex wants it to be a new Magnum.  Is he insane?  Well, more insane.  If you have any info, let us know.

4-4-32: An Interesting Skyline

Since the R32 Skylines became legal, they’ve been popping up everywhere.  They’re like cockroaches in the sense that if you see one, there’s a lot more you’re not seeing.  They’re not like cockroaches, because they’re not spreading disease and scurrying under the fridge when the lights come on.  There’s one that caught my eye a while ago, and I’ve seen it fairly regularly.  It’s not a GTR, or even a GTS-T.  It’s a simple four door, with a motor not usually found under the hood of a Skyline.

It’s packing an SR20 of all things.  The combination of the SR and the extra set of doors make this a unique bird, one that I’d be all over if I had a place to put it and the money to afford it.

Steve McQueen bought it, used it to film Le Mans, then sold it.  It wound up in the Miller Collection years later, and at the museum at Miller Motorsports park.  A legend owned a legend, and I got to bask in its presence.

Sightings: the RATWAGN

You see some awesome things while on vacation.  I started my 2016 on a vacation in St. George, UT with my girlfriend.  We had a simple plan: take some pictures of some places we didn’t make it the last time we were down there.  One of those places were the Lava Rocks: a massive field of, you guessed it, lava rock formations.  There’s no parking lots, so we just pulled off the road and into the shoulder. I was snapping away when I heard the sound of something old making its way down the winding road. I turned around to see what was making the wondorous racket, and prepared to photograph whatever it was.

I snapped some photos, threw the driver and his passenger a thumbs up (they reciprocated), and they drove off over the hill.  And then I started to think I knew that car, and probably its owner.  My girlfriend drove, I combed through Facebook, and I found my answer.  The driver was Blaize Potts, and his passenger was… Some guy I don’t know, but the car was Blaize’s Datsun 510 wagon.  Which has the very appropriate RATWAGN plates.  Since we just saw each other in passing, this is all you get right now.  Hopefully there will be more of the 510, maybe some of his Team Scoundrel teammates (or cohorts, or whatever they are), and some other stuff I saw down there in the coming months.  Until then, enjoy the glory that is an old Datsun on a winding road!

New NSXs at Miller

The first thing I saw when I drove through the gates at Miller Motorsports Park was an exotic looking red car duck behind a row of SUVs, and into one of the GP garages.  Unsure of exactly what I saw, I felt the need to drive over there and see whatever it was.  I came around the SUVs and began looking into the open garages.  I saw a new Porsche 911 Turbo in one, and in the next garage was a white R8.  In the next two garages I saw some people sitting, and someone talking to them.  At this point I thought it was a private track day, and… Well, I was kind of right.

In the next garage was what I saw, and indeed it was something red and exotic looking.  It was a brand new NSX, in what appeared to be near production trim.  No ridiculously huge wheels, no team of Honda/Acura goons surrounding it, no production crew or anything.  It was just there in, across from a group of people who I can only assume were driving it.  I say that last bit, because it was lapping the East track.  I was hoping to sneak over and grab some photos, but when I had an opportunity to run over the NSX was at a stand still on track.  Not sure what happened, because it did get running again.  Then it disappeared.

Since I didn’t know if I could be trackside on the East track while those were running, I elected to not risk getting kicked out.  At the lunch break I stood in the shade of the grandstands at Tooele Turn, and waited for them to come back out.  And I waited, and waited… and waited, waited, waited… and waited.  Then a van came out, and did a lap of the course, which was littered with cone gates.  It did two GLACIAL laps and went in.  Then a pick up truck came out, and took some brisker laps, then disappeared.  And then nothing… There was silence.  NASA Utah was at lunch, Salt City Drift was at lunch, everyone was lunching except me.  And then I heard something with a V8 and pipes fire up.  Shortly after, I saw the old Mustang pace car leading A PAIR of NSXs around!  I leapt into action: I ran to the fence, and down track towards the bottom of the Attitudes.  I started snapping off photos, and was awash in a feeling of accomplishment.  Then hunger kicked in, so I left the NSXs to run about.

And that was only one of three things happening at the track this past weekend. Stay tuned to see what else was going on, and why you should always listen when someone tells you to get out to the track!
