Euro Brews: Cars and Doggos

by Michael Chandler

I started this past weekend off by not really sleeping in, and going to Euro Brews for the first time in a while.  I managed to show up before everyone (hooray poor time management!), and watch a bit of Petit Le Mans.  Then everyone showed up, and conversations were had.

There was also a very good doggo who showed up in a 2002.  Good dog!

Also this fancy lookin hybrid sports coupe made an appearance.  A decent amount of people came out, so here’s a gallery of that.

The Utah 6 Hour

by Michael Chandler

Utah 6 Hour Michael Chandler CAMautoMag cover-1

It was the beginning of the best ten days on this year’s calendar.  Acting as the meat in a sandwich where the delicious bread is a Salt City Drift event and Pirelli World Challenge, and the condiments are a NASA Utah weekend, was the annual Utah 6 Hour.  Now a staple on the NASA Utah calendar, the Western Endurance Racing Championship stop provides a unique opportunity for the drivers and fans to drive into the night, and see nothing but lights piercing the dark Tooele night.  And if you were out around turn 5 around 10:30-11, you would’ve seen me with a string of LED lights strewn about my torso.  I was easily identifiable, for safety!  Anywell, let’s talk about who took home a trophy!

E0

Lyfe Motorsport was out with one of their own Spec Z’s (the Towne Storage Z) and supporting the #99 DLG Racing Z.  Showing that 350Z is life, the Lyfe backed teams finished 1-2 in E0!  The Towne Storage Z completed 147 laps in the 6 hours, with the DLG Z four laps behind them.

E1

In E1, completing 153 laps in the allotted time, was the #65 E46 BMW of Strom Motorsports.  It was the teams second win of the day, having taken the win in the GTS5 class during the Lightning sprint race earlier.

E2

The Fit is fucking go!  The #12 Honda Fit of Honda Performance Development completed 143 laps in 6:01:09.257, and probably had to stop for fuel once.

E3

Utah 6 Hour 2016 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag teaser-2

It was a battle of the Miatas in E3: the mighty and legendary Paul Mitchell versus the bug-eyed RJ Racing Miata.  I mean bug-eyed in the nicest way.  Look at those lights!  Those lights lit the way for 147 laps, and lit their way to victory.

ENP

Utah 6 Hour 2016 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag teaser-1

The ENP had one entrant, the Valkyrie Autosport Elan NP01.  Despite the teams best efforst, the little prototype went behind the wall after 29 laps.

ES

Utah 6 Hour 2016 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag teaser-5

This was a battle: the TruSpeed Autosport 997 Cup car versus the Makes & Models Huracan Super Trofeo.  A tried and true chassis versus a sprint race car.  WERC class leaders one win away from clinching their championship versus a team with multiple regional championships under their belt?  If you’ve been paying any attention to how these posts go, you know that by seeing the picture of the TruSpeed car that they won.  Not only did they win the Utah 6 Hour, they locked up the ES Class championship.  Congratulations to them!

ESR

Now we arrive at the car I was most excited to see running.  Toby Crawford, driver of the Pink Ribbon Racing/Makes & Models Subaru BRZ, told me that there was a Ginetta G57 at UMC and that it was racing in the enduro.  It was the Ryno Racing team, sponsored by Design Masonry.  The G57 is based on Ginetta’s LMP3 design, and is probably a lot the same.*  The big difference is that the LMP3 spec Nissan engine, rated at 420bhp, has been replaced with a Chevrolet LS3, which makes 150 more horsepower than the LMP3 engine.  I was excited to see and hear the 900kg prototype tearing through the night, but unfortunately the car was retired after just 72 laps.

And there it is, another six hour race in the books!  I’m already looking forward to next year.  A tremendous shout out to all the race officials, corner workers, and safety crew for sticking it out until midnight.  A big thank you to the family, friends, and well wishers who came out and watched the race and cheered the teams on.  And all of the congratulations to all of the drivers and crew members for racing in the longest race on the NASA Utah calendar!  There were over thirty cars entered in the race, and they all took the green flag.  It was, as always, an amazing experience.

We can’t wait for next year.

Drifting in Black and White

by Michael Chandler

Salt City Drift 2016 Round 1 B&W Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-14

Drifting is a very colorful thing, undertaken by very colorful people.  This is not going to be colorful, because I did some black and white edits of the photos I shot after sundown.  I call it…

It’s a working title, but it’s strong.

Salt City Drift Round 1: It Didn’t Rain!

by Michael Chandler

Salt City Drift 2016 Round 1 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-31

Yes!  It actually happened!  There was an organized, legal drift event that went off without fear of rain!  And it was a solid six-ish hours (drivers meetings, loading and unloading of cars, and so forth) of driving!  Of course local hero Brandon Wicknick was there!  And so was Nick Stucky!  Although his banana mobile decided it wanted to plantain.  And Derrick Lopez came out, in an SR20 powered S13 hatchback, that was a lot like Brandon’s.  Just more pedestrian in the looks department.

Scott Bradshaw and Dane Seering were out in LS powered S13 coupes.  Scott went with a bass boat theme, while Dane went with a general death and destruction vibe.

We had some friends come up from Southern Utah, and they taught us some valuable lessons: You can link the whole track if you have a twin cam KA in your 240 and have enough lights, and a stock E46 M3 is ready to party as soon as you pull the right fuses.  It wasn’t just a drift event, it was a learning experience.

Salt City Drift 2016 Round 1 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-44

Speaking of learning, there were a lot of new faces out there!  It was good to see some guys who weren’t afraid to go out, suck out loud, and seek out answers as to why they suck, from people who don’t.  That’s how you learn kiddies: go, do, suck,, figure out why you sucked, go again, do again, suck a little less.  I hope we see these guys out again, because by the end of the night they made some progress in the right direction!

We also had our first contest!  Blaize Potts, in his KA24DE powered S13 coupe, finished in first.  Nick Nengas in a virtually stock 350Z finished in second.  Third place was occupied by Hayden Campbell in his E30 BMW.  This wasn’t just a contest for the sake of having a contest.  There are season long stakes on the line!  Whoever has the most points at the end of the season wins a roll cage, or possibly a set of wheels.  Not bad for coming out and sliding with your buddies!

Salt City Drift 2016 Round 1 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-63

The next event is June 18th, out at Utah Motorsports Campus.  This is a daytime event, running from 9am until 5pm.  There’s a mandatory lunch break, so you won’t miss out on any driving because you want a burger.  We hope to see all of these (mostly) smiling faces, along with yours out there!

YOU THINK YOU WOULDN’T GET SOME BONUSES?

Salt City Drift Round 1: Meet in the Midway

by Michael Chandler

SaltCityDriftRD1MidwayMichaelChandlerCAM-23

Words and photos by Michael Chandler

After months of waiting there was finally organized drifting happening again in Utah.  This past weekend the Salt City Drift weekend opened up at Miller Motorsports Park, specifically in the Midway.  Yes, that strip of pavement between the East Course and the big dirt patch played home to the season opener.

SaltCityDriftRD1MidwayMichaelChandlerCAM-5

I ran across this Volvo coupe as I was wandering through the paddock before getting to the course.  I dig older Volvos, especially when they’re rocking the Prancing Moose, but this one was making weird noises.  It didn’t sound like ANY Volvo mill I’ve ever heard, so with Tyler Brown (formerly of Innovative Garage) in tow we went to investigate.

SaltCityDriftRD1MidwayMichaelChandlerCAM-2

There’s usually a good reason when a car doesn’t make a sound that’s usually heard coming from that particular kind of vehicle, and the Volvo as no different.  The Swedish mill was ditched for one of the two liter four cylinder out of an S2000.  This F20C  wasn’t doing to well unfortunately, VTEC wasn’t kicking in yo engaging.  This was most likely due to an oil pressure issue, but aside from that it ran.

SaltCityDriftRD1MidwayMichaelChandlerCAM-3 SaltCityDriftRD1MidwayMichaelChandlerCAM-4

The cabin was business like.  The S2000’s digital gauge cluster sat under the cowl instead of the old one, and a home made switch panel sat just under the dash.  The old moose is a work in progress, and I’m hoping the bugs get worked out so it can slide about in the traditional Scandinavian fashion.

SaltCityDriftRD1MidwayMichaelChandlerCAM-24

Out on the course something interesting was happening.  As you may or may not know, Nick Stucky left the world of Miata world behind and bought an S13 240SX with a Ford 302 cubic inch V8 swap.  Last week he earned a sponsor in the form of D-Spare Garage, making his friend (and Formula D driver and noted opposition of V8 swaps) Brandon Wicknick his boss, if you choose to think of sponsorship like that.  On Saturday morning, Mr. Wicknick hopped into Nick’s car and took it for some laps.  He took it for a few more laps throughout the day, seemingly trying to figure out what sort of ancient magic was at work under the hood.  He’s probably not going to go twin turbo V8 for this upcoming Formula D season, but there’s a chance (insanely slim, but still) he could do that down the road.

SaltCityDriftRD1MidwayMichaelChandlerCAM-26 SaltCityDriftRD1MidwayMichaelChandlerCAM-27

Meanwhile, on the course people were getting after it, as is the style currently.  There’s a gallery of more people sliding through the key hole, along with more shots from the paddock and grid.
