Nothing lasts forever.  Memories fade, seasons change, and projects run their course.  Such is the case with La Flama Blanca, Dallion Felton’s Evo X street car/RallySport Direct’s project car.  After two years and 80,000 miles, it was time to say goodbye.  So I made Dallin, and his little doge Hiroshi, drive to an office park so I could say goodbye to the car.  And also to play with his dog, but mostly to say goodbye to the car.

It still has the APR splitter, vortex generators and GTC 300 wing.  It sits on the same red 18×10.5 Volk TE37RTs, and it still has the Ohlins coilovers.  To be honest, this thing is pretty much the exact same as it was back in February.  That’s not a bad thing at all.  Back then it put down a healthy 293 horsepower and 289 lb/ft of torque, which is pretty good considering what power adders were installed.

Fairly simple straight forward things: Tomei Titanium cat-back, test pipe, Big Mouth downpipe, and upper intercooler pipe.  A Mishimoto intercooler, oil cooler, and radiator are things you would find on a lot of street driven Evo Xs, as are the AEM intake and TurboSmart blow off valve.  The biggest changes are ones you can’t see.

Those big changes?  A set of 1300cc fuel injectors from Injector Dynamics, a Cosworth high volume fuel rail, a TurboSmart fuel pressure regulator, and an AEM E85 capable 320lph fuel pump cradled in a Cobb Tuning fuel pump holder.  Oh, and a Cavalli Stage 2 Turbo.  The ball bearing, single scroll turbo has a 58mm inducer and 56mm exducer, and fits like the OEM turbo.  Despite fitting like the stock turbo, it makes more power than the stock turbo.  How much more?  With a fresh tune on 91 octane the car put down 330 horsepower and 277 lb/ft of torque.  On a  tune optimized for E70 (ethanol, corn fuel, stuff you can’t get at a pump in Salt Lake County as far as I know) it made 408 horsepower and 345 lb/ft of torque!

Those are respectable numbers for a street car!  And there’s more room for the next owner to turn up the heat.  The turbo can move enough air for 600 horsepower.  And yes, I said next owner.  By now the car, and many of its parts have found new homes with other Evo Xs.  Fear not, Dallin is on to bigger and better things.

Import Spring Showoff: The History

This coming Sunday is the Import Spring Showoff, one of the largest shows/meets in the state.  This year it is going to be held at the Maverick Center, which is a physically larger venue than the Davis County Fairgrounds that have held it the past couple of years.  Every year this event keeps growing, and it’s amazing to think that this all started as a simple barbecue at Barnes Park.

Back in the days of MySpace and forums, the Teknik crew of northern Utah would gather at Barnes Park in Kaysville and celebrate spring.  It wasn’t a massive, sponsor laden affair.  It was the crew and some friends just hanging out.  Soon after these little meets is when I popped into the picture.  The little Teknik barbecue had become the Eliterides meet, and subsequently grew in size.  They still weren’t massive, but they were bigger. This was the way it was for a few years, but by 2007 some of the Teknik members founded Utah Acuras and turned the little barbecue into a decent sized meet.  The little parking lot on the west side of the park was too small for the needs of the meet, but the southwest parking lot was perfectly sized.  This was the home of the meet for many years, but when Utah Acuras evolved into Utah Hondas things began to change.

2008 through 2010 saw a lot of growth, and plenty of non Hondas in attendance.  By 2010 the meet had outgrown the southwest lot, and attendees were lining 200 North.  The Spring Meet was going to be changing again, but it wasn’t going to be moving too far.

In 2011 the meet filled the northwest lot, and spilled into the surrounding parking lots.  There were sponsor booths, and raffles!  It was looking like the massive event that we know it as today.  The next year the meet grew even more, and the organizers ran into some problems.  Some BIG problems.  First, the parking lot was full 45 minutes before the event was scheduled to begin.  Secondly, and more importantly, Kaysville City PD shut the meet down early because the staff failed to get the proper permits and make the proper reservations.  According to Jeff Woodyatt “It was then that we realized (along with more non-Honda’s in attendance than Honda’s) that it was time to turn the spring meet into a legit event for all makes and models.”  2013 was the first official year of the Import Spring Showoff, and it was held at the Davis County Fairgrounds.  Permits and reservations were acquired, and the rest is history.


As the meet evolved things were added and removed.  The most notable addition were the awards given by the attendees and staff.  Some have faded from our memories, but there’s one that some will never forget.  Yes, I’m talking about The Ghetto Award.  First given out to a Civic hatchback that was very slow and rather haggard, it was given to a Civic coupe with a bird drawn on its hood in primer the next year.  In 2007 Dave, yes our Dave, got a hold of a small steel wheel and got creative with a can of spray paint and a sharpie.


The idea behind the award was to recognize the most haggard, beat up, and generally terrible car that came to the meet.  It was meant to motivate the recipient to make their car less offensive to everyone, and it usually happened.  That hatchback wound up making 500 horsepower, and the coupe got painted.  However, the winner of the 2007 award never actually received it.  In 2007, at the joint Utah Acuras and HondaTech meet, it rained.  It always rained at HondaTech meets, and this year was no different.  A lone, multicolored Eclipse rolled through the meet.  Everyone was in their cars, avoiding the rain and watching the harlequin DSM slowly roll through.  One man, a hero, could not let this car leave without a physical representation of the recognition he earned.  Dave lept out of his car, hoisted the award above his head and began chasing the Eclipse.  Not knowing what Dave wanted, and not eager to find out, the Eclipse quickly left the parking lot while Dave gave chase.  Tragically, that was the last time the award was given.  It’s probably for the best, as I doubt that anyone would A) be able to take it as the joke it is and B) fix up their hoopty.

Now that we know where we’ve been, and how a humble meet became the juggernaut that it is today, we need to take a look at how this meet happens every year.  In part two of this story, we’ll take a look behind the scenes so you can see everything that goes into making Import Spring Showoff happen every year.

Tresduro: NASA Utah’s 2014 Season Finale

Every year for… many years NASA Utah, and MPRA before them, have thrown an endurance race to close out the season.  Normally it’s the standard X amount of hours in a row, on a track that has the corners in the same places as the lap before.  This year things would be different.  Very different.  Not mind blowingly, life alteringly different, but still different.  There would still be an endurance race, but not all in a row.  It would run on the Outer Loop… and the East Course… and the West Course.

That’s right baby!  Dynamic track!  Basically here’s how it would shake out: All the HPDE groups and TT would run on the Outer Loop only, while the race group and the open wheel guys would jump between all three configurations.  If you remember the Pirelli World Challenge races from a couple of months ago, then this track switching concept isn’t so foreign.  They ran the World Challenge GT races on the Outer Loop, Spec B and Miller GT Challenge on the West Course and the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West guys got the East Course.  What was foreign, and I can’t stress this enough, was having the same group of competitors running three different track configurations on the same day for the same race!  Well, technically it wasn’t all the same race, but the drivers’ times in each race would be combined and whoever had the best time would be the class winner.  Speaking of which, let’s stop talking about the track thing and talk about racing!

The Open Wheel guys were in the same boat as the Race Group: three different tracks, three races, one time to decide a winner.  In Formula Troy Duffin and Steven Costello continued their season long battle, but at the end of the long day there had to be a winner.  And that winner was Troy, who completed 34 laps in the allotted time compared to Steven’s 33.  In Super Formula it was the the #11 Rodizio Grill sponsored car of Terry Biner running away with the class win, leaving Steve Burns and John LaBrie to duke it out for second.  In what can only be described as driving feats never seen since the days of Juan Manuel Fangio*, Steve Burns defeated John LaBrie!

*Not really true at all, but both John and Steve had really good drives in their races

It was time for the TT competitors to take to the track after the Open Wheel drivers vacated it.  Their four sessions held weight because, while the season points chases were over for everyone else, this was a points event for the TT drivers.  While some people had wrapped up their season titles (more on that in another post), some people were still fighting tooth and nail for theirs.  People like Shay Campbell and James Pasquier, who pitted their Porsche 911s against some ST3 competitors and a healthy chunk of the Spec Z field.  Despite finishing in 14th, five spots behind James and scoring 5 points less than him, Shay locked up his TT3 points title!  Meanwhile, at the front of the TT3 crowd, Travis Tidball took the win.

In TT1 the guys of TW Racing put their Audi R8 LMS atop the podium, and solidified their championship.  However second place in the class was up for debate.  If you remember, Shawn Murphy ventilated the engine block in his WRX STi which sidelined it for the remainder of the season and seemingly opened the door for Smith-Burke Racing to leapfrog one of our favorite Wyomingans… Wyomingites?  Whatever, Shawn needed to hold off the C5 Corvette, so he did what any enterprising man with a willing girlfriend would do: he used her car for the last two events.  He didn’t win, but he scored JUST enough points to hold off the Data Motorsports backed Corvette to stay in second place.

In TTE Ben Lamberson put used all 127 horsepower his Audi could muster to beat Steve Larsen, and cement his title.  TTU was missing it’s most notable competitor: the Lyfe Motorsports/Wild Schick Racing R35 GTR was in California doing some testing, which left the class wide open for Rhett Panter to win.  TT2 was won by David Bradshaw, and Josh Bennett took home the win in TTB.

And we finally arrive at the Race Group, the other group that would take on the perils of driving three different tracks over the course of one race day.  It also had some interesting driver line-ups, including George Smith piloting a Miata with Les Long, Derek Wolthoff driving Brendon Stewart’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, and…  Well, there’s no easy way to say this…

In E0 we saw No Whammies (Travis Tidball) hit big money and stop atop the podium, ahead of Travis Williams in the #22 Discount Tire FR500S Mustang and Good Guy Gus Stribakos in the 888 Porsche.

In a class by himself, literally, was the Idaho Mountain Touring Porsche 911 in E1.  Let’s take a moment to appreciate how pretty it is.  Ahhhhhhhh.

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming.

ES.  The Big boys.  You know the Names: TW Racing, Big Bob Evans, Dandy Dan Worley, Steve “Mister” Burns and “Mister En Fuego” Brendon Stweart.  They were all fighting for the victory.  The gritty field went wheel to wheel and door to door all day! Except when Brendon broke a suspension component.  That sidelined him.  And Bob blew a tire in the last race of the day, so his day ended early too… But when they were running, they were threatening to take away podium finishes from other drivers!  In the end it came down to two teams: the TW Racing crew had adjusted their R8 LMS so Allen Turner could fully exploit it’s advantages, while Tatum Racing had the LSx powered Porsche 944 tuned to peak efficiency for Dan Worley.  Who would emerge victorious?

In the end the Audi proved too much for the Porsche, and TW Racing took home the class and overall victory.

In the end, we all took home a victory.  Over the course of the season we saw drivers snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and overcome devastating events.  We saw camaraderie and good natured competitiveness, and most importantly: everyone at the end of the day could walk away uninjured.

And so ends the NASA season.  On behalf of me and the staff here at CAMautoMag, I would like to say thank you to Matt Guiver, Dave Kizerian and Dan McKeever for the awesome season, the track workers for the thankless and tireless jobs they do to make the racing happen, and especially to the drivers.  Everyone from the HPDE 1 drivers, all the way up to the Super Unlimited class drivers and everyone in between.  We do this because we have the same passion as you guys, and since we can’t get out there and drive with you guys (yet!) the next best thing is to come out shoot some photos and say some nice words about what you’re doing out there.

We’ll be at the Awards Banquet on November 22, where we’re looking forward to seeing everyone!  We will also have things for you to purchase if you so choose.

NASA Utah Round 4

Round four of the NASA Utah season was held on the East Track of Miller Motorsports Park on a lovely late June Saturday.  Not only were the usual competitors out and about, there were guests from some of the neighboring states who came to get their fill of racing.  The track also welcomed competitors from the Formula 3 PanAm series for what was… Well, the little Abarth powered cars were out and about.

See? There they are.  It was immensely interesting to watch them run around and hear their turbos spooling up.  Unfortunately Saturday was a series of practice sessions for these little cars, but the Formula and Super Formula racers made up for it with their two races and combined nine car field.  You could say the action was *puts on sunglasses* hot.

Sorry.  The Formula field was home to the flame throwers of #42 Chris Taylor and #16 Steve Dickert, pictured above.  While they looked the coolest while doing so, they finished in positions three (Taylor) and four (Dickert) in both races.  Second place in both races went to Steven “No, I don’t know Elvis” Costello, and taking the win twice was Troy “The Duffman” Duffin.  This is the second consecutive race day where the Duffin and Costello took the top two spots, and the first weekend where they received nicknames.  It may also be the last weekend for the nicknames.  On to Super Formula!

Races one and two were taken by Ian Lacy, with an average margin of victory of twenty seconds.  Who was looking at the back end of Lacy’s Mazda was a different matter.  In race one it was Terry Biner in the #11 Rodizio Grill car, who was ahead of the #6 piloted by Bryant Gay.  In race two the pair switched, with Gay finishing ahead of Biner.  Positions four and five in both races were held by John LaBrie and Dennis Gay respectively.

The Time Trial group saw new faces from our neighboring states, and also the freshly wrapped T.W. Racing Audi R8 LMS.  Derek Wolthoff took home the win in TT1, but not after a situation in one of the morning sessions.  The car lost all power, leading to the session being black flagged.  There was concern as to what happened.  I managed to find Derek in his garage during the lunch break, but he was napping.  Thankfully someone else with the team told me a relay box came loose, which cause the loss of power.  The reattached the box and away they went in the next session.  Second place belonged to Mark Melchor and his blue FD chassis RX7, and rounding out the podium was another blue car: Shawn Murphy’s STi.

TT2 was a two man affair between Greg Valdez and John Allen.  On paper it would seem as though Allen’s 911 would walk away from Greg’s STi, but Lelantos proved victorious by running a 1:43.648, 1.57 seconds quicker than the Porsche could manage.

Christopher Mayfield and his red BMW took the top spot in TT3, running away from Travis Williams’s Mustang which edged out Shay Chappell’s Porsche 911.

TTB saw two of the top three spots owned by Honda S2000s.  Michael Forsythe and Hsun Chen took first and third, with Richard Thiessens breaking up the potential 1-2 S2000 podium by less than half a second with his STi.

In TTD Gordon Anderson’s Miata too the win over Kieth Pizio’s Honda Civic, while in TTE another Miata (driven by David Sherman) beat out Ben Lamberson’s Audi and Jeb Brown’s Subaru to take thw win.

Cole Powelson took the Wild Shick Racing GTR to the winner’s circle in TTU, followed by Robert Cowan in his Shelby Cobra kit car.  Richard Weston is listed in third place in the class, but no time is listed.

A twenty-three car field made up the Lightning race group, and within it there were bright flashes of brilliance.  The first such flash came form Arthur Golebiowski in Spec Z.  Not only did he win the class, but he yet again took the top spot in the run group.  To be fair, the Spec Z class was the fastest class in the group and also one of three 5 car classes.  Second place in Spec Z belonged to Ashley Burt, and third was Tom Kaminski’s.

The top of the Spec Miata field was a race long battle between Chris Bond and MacKay Snow.  Chris held the young Snow off for a while, but MacKay got around the red 007 car and managed to keep Bond in his mirrors, securing another win for the Snow family.  Meanwhile, David Sherman took the other white and blue Miata to the low step on the podium.

Speaking of Miatas, Todd Green took his to another victory in PTE.  Mr. Green can wheel, and the 40+ second margin of victory and a fastest lap two and a half seconds faster than the next quickest show that.  Allan Anderson and Randy Cummings battled for second place, with Cummings coming out on top.

Mr. Joseph Ostrander narrowly beat out Rob Hickman for the GTS2 win.  The BMWs battled all race long, and Hickman kept trying to make moves on Ostrander but nothing would stick.  Christina Werley, a bit further back from the acation, took third place.

The 944 Spec class had the second closest gap between the winner and second place.  Daniel Williams and Greg Troester went head to head all race, fighting through traffic to keep pace with the other.  Williams passed Troester and managed to hold him off for a win by .220 seconds!  Otto Silva  rounded out the podium.

Despite being in PTB, Bill Noblitt ran with the top two GTS2 competitors.  His total time of 22:06.854 was five seconds slower than GTS2 second place finisher Rob Hickman.  He took the class win by default, but still put on quite a driving performance.

After the Lightning comes the Thunder, and this group was very solid.  There were multi-class battles all over the track (pictured above: ST2 class winner Brendon Stewart and GTS4 class winner Chris Vivolo battle through The Attitudes), and also some disappointments.  Kyle Shick blew the intercooler piping off in the Wild Shick Racing GTR and retired after five laps.  Dave Dingman lost the clutch in the Freeway Mazda sponsored Miata after four laps, and spent the rest of the race stuck on the side of the track.

There were three one man classes in the group.  Camaro Mustang Challenge was occupied by Joe Bogetich and his white Camaro.  Russ Timmons and his orange and chrome Porsche 911 were all by their lonesome in GTS5, and Dennis Gay in the white RaceCo 911 was the one man band in GTSU.

As mention previsouly, Chris Vivolo took the win in GTS4.  He put a twenty-seven and a half second lead on John Allen, who took second, while Gregory Dell finished a lap down for third.

Ricky Rudd, I mean Bob Evans in the #88 Snickers Ford Fusion Car Of Tomorrow beat out  Patrick Laughlin’s deBoulle Porsche 911 for a ST1 win.

Brendon Stewart was the only driver in ST2 to finish on the lead lap, which meant he won.  A lap down in second was Drew Wadolny.  Nine laps down was Dave Dingman, who retired with clutch issues.

Travis Tidball held off the massive ST3 pack to claim a victory.  Second place in the nine car class was Todd Ainsworth in the Us Against One clothing STi, with Jason Bamberg nipping at his heels in the #92 Mustang.

With the Wild Shick Racing GTR retiring after five laps, Super Unlimited was George Smith’s to lose.  He did not do that, finishing a lap ahead of Skip Sasser’s S10 pickup.

It was a solid day of racing, with a record number of entrants: 132.  Will there be more in August for Round 5?  Here’s to hoping we see some new faces and yours August 15-17 for some racing on the outer loop!

NASA Utah 2014 Round 1: Thunder and Lightning

The first NASA Utah weekend of the year brought with it its fair share of action.  From new track records to people driving the wheels off their cars, local hero’s, rookies, and national champs all came out to enjoy Utah regions Round 1.  Over 100 drivers challenged Miller Motorsports Park’s outer loop configuration, and our Thunder and Lightning race group featured well over 40 cars on grid for the start of Saturdays race!

The GTS drivers were out in force, and entirely in Porsche 911s.  In GTSU David Donner put his red and white Air Power Racing prepped machine in First place ahead of Peter Spencer and John Scarlett, both also in Air Power Racing machines.

GTS5 demonstrated some close racing between Alan Wilson and Roberto Albarran, with Roberto edging out Alan by just under 1 second, despite Alan posting better lap times.  Russ Timmons debuted his beautiful new orange and chrome wrap job to round out 3rd.  Sundays race was another barn burner for these two, Alan was leading a close battle when a daring move in lap traffic, quickly turned into a carefully managed spin, moving him to 2nd, but with Desire supporting over the radio, Alan climbed back into 2nd place, while Mark Brouse finished 3rd.

 GTS4 was a two man battle between Darrell Troester and Chris Vivolo in their Tatum Racing 911s.  When the checkered flag dropped it was Darrell taking the class win.  Darrell was able to repeat his victory on Sunday, securing a healthy lead for his season.

In the Pro Touring classes it was Douglas Turnquist versus Bill Noblitt in PTB and Todd Green versus his Miata in PTE.  Douglas put his Porsche 944 ahead of Bill Noblit’s Boxster, which retired early due to a mechanical issue.

Todd Green had an exciting Saturday in PTE. After only 4 laps his driver’s front wheel decided it wanted to take a lap off.  It took the hub and brake rotor off into the infield while Todd wrangled the rest of the car to a stop just outside of turn 6. Determined to get back in the game he recruited Matt Guiver and Travis Tidball to sacrifice the E3 Miata sitting quietly in the garage.  Todd worked hard and got his #60 PTE Miata back on the grid in time to edge out Allan Anderson for the class win on Sunday.

In other Miata racing news, Chris Bond was your Spec Miata winner, ahead of David Sherman and Troy Duffin respectively.  Rounding out the class were McKay Snow, Paul McGarvey, and rookie Joe Shubert.  David came back with all cylinders firing on Sunday and put down some consistent laps to take 1st place, Troy Duffin clinched 2nd, and Chris Bond had to settle for 3rd.  Larry Carpenter had his hands full keeping cars tuned up for this competitive class.

Paul House

Spec Z featured all rookie drivers, in 3 brand new Nissan 350Z Spec racers. Spec racing rules meant the cars were nearly identical, but Arthur Golebiowski, Tom Kaminski, and Paul House drove them very differently.  Arthur wrestled his Strace Z into first, Tom pedaled to 2nd place, and Paul closed the race in 3rd. Arthur even took home a BFG R1 race tire, and $250 from Nissan for his debut race with NASA Utah.  Sunday saw a surprise reversal, Thomas managed to take advantage of traffic to secure 1st place, even though Arthur set a new Spec Z track record with a 2:11.4 his effort was only good enough 2nd.  Paul managed to bring it home in one piece for 3rd. All weekend these three drivers could be found in the paddock discussing strategy, and working on each other’s cars, it’s always nice to see camaraderie in the race grids.

Rounding out the Spec classes is Spec 944, which was the closest racing of the day!  Samuel Kapp in his Eurotonic backed 944 battled with Otto Silva and his orange Euroworks machine.  It was close, but Samuel took the win by .396 seconds after 10 laps on this 3 mile course!

Super Touring was a dense field, with the quickest cars and some very experienced drivers at the wheels.  It also featured the widest variety of vehicles. From Alex Whetman’s Focus of Doom to Madison Snow’s IMSA GTD class 991 Porsche that sees action in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.  There are also a good handful of Corvettes, and in ST1 is where we find the 2013 National champ Team Smith-Burke Corvette.  They were competing with Dan Worley and his Chevy LS1 powered Porsche 944.  They came out of the box with a fast pace, opening up a 1:15.701 gap, and setting a new NASA Utah record in the process.

Brendon Stewart

ST2 had old hand Byron Smith in his BMW against rookie Brendon Stewart in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.  Brendon was hoping to not have a repeat of last season’s catastrophic failures and missed races, and things seemed to be working great.  However an incident with the the #33 Skullcandy Team Nissan Altima in Clubhouse turn resulted in a spin, and driver penalties for Brendon.  Determined to learn from his mistake, Brendon found the very small pieces of his bumper, and got the car back together to take 1st on Sunday with a 2:05.4.

ST3 was the deepest class with eleven drivers, seven of whom with driving FR500S Mustangs.  Of the Mustang drivers, R. Ryan Curl proved to be the fastest, coming in fifth in class behind Todd Ainsworth’s Us Against One Clothing backed Subaru WRX STi.  Cary Wilson took the class win in his gray C5 Corvette, earning some Hoosier race tires for his efforts, and Alex Whetman’s managed his Focus into second despite a catastrophically failed power steering pump. His effort was good for a contingency award for 1 free BFG R1! Gary Free’s RaceCo prepped Mustang FR500S rounded out the podium in what is shaping up to be an exciting season. Sunday saw Cary once again secure 1st place, while battling a new to him car, Todd Ainsworth drove the UAO STi to 2nd place, and Ryan Curl put down a blistering pace in his Ford Racing school FR500S easily securing 3rd place with a 2:13.9.

SU was the class to watch.  Two IMSA Tudor United SportsCar Championship Porsches paired off against the two Skullcandy Team Nissan Altimas which see action in Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge.  Also in the fray were 2014 NASA SU National Champion George Smith and NASA Rookie Skip Sasser in Chevrolet S10. The Nissan’s were plagued by problems: the #33 had an incident with ST2 driver Brendon Stewart, while the #34 Nissan had clutch issues which forced them to retire after eight laps. No stranger to the race track, Skip Sasser drove his #38 S10 to a fourth place finish behind Melanie Snow in the #62 UIS Snow Racing Porsche 911.  Ahead of her was George Smith in the yellow JDP sponsored C5 Corvette.  And topping the SU podium in 1st place, Madison Snow. The 2013 IMSA GT3 Cup champion had a commanding lead by the time the checkered flag dropped.  Sunday saw Les Long owner/operator of Air Power racing get behind the wheel of his Super Unlimited GT3, but there was nothing he could do to compete with Madison Snow. Driving hard, Madison managed a record shattering 1:52.0 to secure the win.

And so ends a successful opening weekend to the NASA Utah season.  The next race weekend is April 25-27 on the West track.  Registration is open and we look forward to seeing everyone return for Round 2 of the NASA Utah racing series

Bad Luck Brendon

Hitting every light on the way to work and showing up half an hour late. Parking seventeen miles away from the mall entrance, and coming out to see that not only has someone parked next to you BUT they have completely ignored the lines and are millimeters from your car’s door. Running out of gas. All of these are considered bouts of “bad luck”. Brendon Stewart laughs at your bad luck. Why does he laugh at your pain? Because while you were sitting in traffic he was in his garage replacing his second transfer case pinion gear. While you were contemplating teaching that fellow a lesson, he was missing ANOTHER race weekend because his Evo decided to not want to work. What was he doing while you were trudging to the gas station, readying your body for the gouging you were about to receive? Well, let’s just say it was worse than that…

Despite all of the problems, Brendon is hopeful for the 2014 season. He sat down with me to talk about last year’s problems and this years plans.

What happened last season?

In general what happened?

Yeah, in general what happened.

Oh man, last season was tough. I had a lot of really unfortunate situations with mechanical failures in the car. Just seemed like every single time I went out I didn’t ever have a very successful day, until the very last race of the year; so I was always working the car and everything was always not right.


The most spectacular failure that we all saw was the fire. What happened there?

Umm, that was incredibly unfortunate because that was a brand new engine. So my stock engine spun a rod bearing after 5000 race miles, which is not really that unusual. It was probably time for a refresh, but because it happened I ended up building an engine. Thought I’d spend the money and make it nice, not cut any corners, and it ran really, really well. It was a really good engine, first day.

It was too good to be true

Second day unfortunately, just kinda down the main straight it spun another bearing and started knocking. And I just tried to limp it around to get back to the pits, and it didn’t even make it another half a lap. It seized, shot a rod through the block and everything caught fire, and that’s that.


So you said that was a new motor, but was that the original transmission? Did you have to replace that?

I believe that was the original transmission, which has been rebuilt a few times. New synchros, maintenance stuff. There’s never been any catastrophic transmission failure, which is good… yet.

But I have blown through two transfer case pinion gears, two engines in this car now. Umm… I think that’s the extent of the really big problems.


The really big ones that have sidelined you. Was this your first year doing door to door or your second?

First year doing door to door. I was just working on doing all my individual rookie races done so I could get my full competition license. Unfortunately I was only able to complete two full race days, which actually count, so I still need to work on that. Gonna be an interesting 2014.

Did you have to change anything going from TT (time trail) to ST (door to door)?

Umm yeah, the biggest changes were safety items in the car so I really didn’t have to change a lot of, really anything for rules other than safety cause the power to weight ratio rules and stuff like that were all the same.


So nothing mechanical wise, just safety stuff.

Exactly. I had to get an updated harness, I had to add either a new seat or a seat brace and I added a seat brace. Window net, fire suppression system. I had to change my roll cage a little bit cause it was uncompliant. But other than that…


The car is for sale, and all I heard was that you want something V8 and rwd for your next platform. But the car hasn’t sold…

The car has not sold, but I do have an interested person potentially … So we’ll see what happens with that, but if it doesn’t go through then I’ll continue to just race this car through next year. Hopefully work on making it more reliable, and be able to finish developing the car because I still don’t feel that I’ve been able to reach its full potential in its current state.

What were you going to be getting? If the Evo sold you’d be getting…

If the Evo sells, or sold, it’d be an S13 240 chassis with an LS1 V8. Pretty basic, reliable.


I don’t want this to happen, but I gotta ask: if last season’s events start to repeat (this year) will you just hang it up or will you keep trying to get out there?

I don’t know. That’s a really tough question honestly, because it’s been really difficult to keep going and I have so much passion for this sport that I really want to keep going. But at some point. I don’t know, something needs to change for me to keep being able to do it. If I keep having bad luck, or if there’s a really big problem then it’s going to be tough.

Hopefully you can get back out there! And I noticed something. When the car was orange you had the sock monkey hanging from the riser on the spoiler, and everything was kick ass. Then the next year you didn’t (have the sock monkey) and everything went wrong.

It’s true.

Can you have the sock monkey on the spoiler? Or…

Umm… I’m not sure because I got a lot of grief when it was on the spoiler previously, but they let it slide cause it was actually sewn on and they were afraid it was going to fall off and cause debris. But that was also before we moved into the NASA rule set, so they’re a lot more strict now. But maybe I can put it inside the car now.

Wicked Evo VIII

  Engine roaring, drums turning, and exhaust spewing. We walk into the dyno area at Ziptie Dynowerks to see this Evo pulling at the straps holding it to the dyno. “Pop-pop”, the exhaust spits as he lets off the gas. This Evo had just pulled down a baseline run of 400whp on Ziptie’s Mustang Dyno. Not bad, but there’s more to be had and this wicked Evo ensures it lives up to its reputation.

 Dan, the owner of this Evo, works on jets for his day job. Driving a mundane car isn’t what he wants. He wants the adrenaline, the speed. His parents told him he could have any car he wanted when he was 16, as long as it wasn’t fast. He showed them, he bought a Ford Ranger…then swapped in a 302 V8! This kind of attitude, led to this build.

600HP Evo
 This wicked Evo starts off with a .040 overbore with forged pistons and rods. The motor breathes life into the Buschur Racing forward-facing manifold which lets the air spin the HTA GT3586R turbo and Tial Wastegate. Combined with a massive set of 1650cc FIC injectors, AEM fuel rail and fuel pressure regulator, and Walboro dual inline fuel pumps, all controlled by an AEM EMS, you know this car means business. It is cooled off by a Frozen Boost air to water intercooler.

 This build has been a year in the making. While Dan was stationed overseas, BJ, the owner of the One of a Kind Galant built this motor for him. The bottom end was buttoned up, but a ported cylinder head and a custom Magnaflow exhaust would be needed. And getting the power to the ground is an MR transmission swap with an Exedy twin-plate clutch.

 Dan spent a lot of time on the dyno getting this car tuned. Unfortunately, he was moving to a new base and time was limited. With it strapped to the rollers, the car made 529HP and 430 lb. ft. torque to the wheels at 28psi. No small figure, but there is more to come. The head gasket blew on the dyno, but the tuner knows 600whp is there.

 The power is there, and the looks are pure Evo. An Evo IX front bumper helps accentuate the front. A set of Tein springs bring the car closer to the ground and keep the car on the road. The wheels are Weds Sport and bring some style to the profile, while the stock Brembo brakes bring the car to a halt.

 Future plans for the car include re-painting the stock brake calipers, getting that 600whp, and just enjoying the car to its fullest potential. After seeing this car make some pulls on that dyno, it needs to be driven, even if it does bite back every once in awhile.

Photo Friday

Is it Friday already?  Sweet!  That means tomorrow I’ll be out at Miller Motorsports Park for Lap Battle and NASA racing tomorrow!  It also means two new wallpapers for you to download and stare at lovingly!  As always: right click, view image, save image


The UtahHondas.net meet brought out over 500 cars, including this pair of Evos.  It’s always nice seeing Mitsubishi’s rally box out and about, and it’s even better when you can see two generations parked next to each other like these two.


This is an upcoming feature, but I like the photo so much I’m dropping it early.  The shoot got rained out, but we got this Integra SiR shot in the nick of time!
