NASA Utah Round 3: We’re Drowning in Z’s

by Michael Chandler

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-7

There were fifteen entries in Spec Z on Saturday.  15!  The other Lightning group classes, combined, had eighteen cars.  It’s safe to say that we’re drowning in Spec Z’s.  Anyway, on to the coverage!  And let’s begin in Spec Z, where Arthur Golebiowski was fighting off four other drivers for the top spot in the championship.  None of the four drivers, nor Arthur, took the win.  It was James Burke who won the day.  Yes, James Burke and that delightful accent of his took P1 in class and overall in the group.  Yeah, I called his accent delightful.  Have you heard him speak?  Best accent on the grid!

In the next largest spec class, Spec Miata, Bond, Chris Bond took home another gold medal.  He’s still holding to the top spot in class, but Matt Williamson is still hot on his heels.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-8

And in the loneliest spec class, Spec Boxster, Mark Boschert turned some solid laps.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-10

We got some 944 Spec action!  Samuel Kapp held off Otto Silva and took home the win in the all Porsche class.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-11

Nathan Rohner took home another win in PTBrrappp.  Seriously, this thing was shooting fire going into turn 1.  Someone join him!

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-9

Todd Green, in the mighty Paul Mitchell, ran away from Randy Cummings in PTE.  Here we see Todd next to Dave Dingman, 4th in Spec Miata, going into turn 1.  Todd, or at least Paul Mitchell, took home the win in TTE as well.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1

Jeff and Blake had a new running mate in GTS3!  It was Bob Boileau, in a BMW Z4!  Good job Bob, solid work.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-12

I don’t know why, but I have this weird urge to insert an H into Tom Rogers’s name.  Call him Thom.  Don’t know why.  Anyway, Thom and his BMW took the win in GTS2, a square 26.159 seconds ahead of Chris Haunold and his Porsche.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-16

Somebody buy a BRZ and challenge Trever Pope.  He’s alone in TTD, and could use a friend.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-18

Darin Beaudoin and his dirty, drifty Miata grabbed the TTB win.  If anyone is getting sick of me calling S2000’s Miatas, I have bad news for you: I’m not stopping.  AND NEITHER IS DARIN!!!! MAUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-19

James Pasquier piloted the Porsche of my dreams to a win in TT3 over some BRZ’s, and a friendly guy in a Subaru.  Seriously James, I want your 911 or a reasonable facsimile!

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-6

Alex Whetman and the Focus of Doom, which I did not strap a camera to, came out of wherever it is they hide and took the TT2 victory of Shawn Murphy, his new flares, and his weird desire to go off-roading.  We’ll hunt down the elusive Alex and stick a camera on the Focus at Round 4!  Or whenever.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-17

Jordan Priestly was out and about in the 2016 Camaro development mule.  He then decided to DQ that car, and jump in Michael Eifling’s Corvette.  And in doing so winning TT1.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1-2

We finally come to TTU, which was a bit different than usual.  As you can see, this isn’t Wade Hall’s Mustang, nor is it the Makes & Models Super Trofeo Huracan.  This is, however, Brendon Stewart, and it is a Makes & Models car.  It also was the fastest TTU car of the day.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-2

Speaking of 996 Porsche 911’s: Darrell Troester collected a GTS4 win with his 996 Cup Car!

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-3

In ST3, and *just* in front of whatever CA Sport car was coming out of Release, was Frank Gannett.  He brought home another win in the black Ford Performance Racing School Mustang.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1-3

JR Smith piloted him E36 BMW to a solid ST2 drive, which got him a gold medal.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-14

George Smith ran his Corvette in ST1 trim, which meant he was down on power.  Normally this wouldn’t be much of a problem, except ST1 had a five car field.  And Bob did some more aero modifications to the Snickers car (that’s a story in and of itself).  Despite all of that, George took home the win!

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-15

Les Long broke out his 997 Cup car, which I’ve heard rumors about.  Rumors that make me want to know more about the car.  Anyway, Les and the pirate Porsche took home the SU class win.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-4

Mckay Snow, and his determined look, claimed a GTSU victory.  Frankly, it would’ve been more surprising if he didn’t win.  The big story in GTSU is the lack of the Makes & Models Huracan ST.  Unfortunately, the Huracan met the wall during an earlier practice session.  Things were broken, but Derek was ok.  The car?  Well, that’s TBD.  When I saw it, it didn’t look so bad.  Then again, I grossly underestimate how bad things look to repair.

And that’s that.  Another NASA Utah weekend in the books.  Join us for the next race weekend, June 10-12.  They’ll be on the West track, where things can get interesting.

The Race For The Auld Mug: NASA Utah Round 2 Thunder Results

by Michael Chandler

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-1-2

It’s just not a NASA Utah season without at least one rainy day.  Conveniently,  Mother Nature decided to bring the rain for round two, and so the annual NASA Utah Regatta was under way.  If you’ve been a loyal reader this week, or if you’re not blind, you’ll have come to the conclusion that this is the Thunder Group write up.  These guys, in their high horsepower and high downforce cars, got lucky and qualified in the dry!  But the photo above is from lap one of the race on Saturday, which is clearly not dry.  A some of the field packed it in when the rain began falling at lunch time, which led to a total of ten entrants in the race.  Let’s talk about those brave sailors, and how they finished.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-2

Byron Smith was the lone GTS4 entrant, and completed 11 laps in the rain.  He had a best lap of 2:00.717, and took home a gold medal for his troubles.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-1

Russ Timmons made an appearance in his orange and chrome 997.  Always enjoy seeing that car on track.  Russ was alone in GTS5, so he could have completed less than the 7 he did and still would have taken home a medal.

We had a couple of rookies in ST3!  Both Frank Gannett and James Harrell were both out in Boss 302RS’s from the Ford Performance Racing School.  Frank, in the black #93 Mustang, didn’t do anything meme worthy on Saturday and took home the win.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-3

ST2 was another solitary car field, and that man was J.R. Smith.  He, and the nobles steed that is the E36 M3, ran 11 laps en-route to a class win.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-5

So, I only heard that Air Power Racing had both of the former Effort Racing 911 GT3Rs, but I needed confirmation before saying something like “holy f&#king ass crackers!  Air Power has both of the Effort cars!”.  On Saturday I got that confirmation, because both cars were out for qualifying.  David Donner went out in the #41 car as the lone Super Unlimited entrant, finished on the lead lap, and ran a 1:43.699!  In the rain!  In one of the widest 911s I’ve ever seen!

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-4

As mentioned earlier, wonder kid Madison Snow was out in the UIS Huracan.  And since he has significantly more experience in said platform he dominated the GTSU field.  He took the win by 18.603 seconds, and his fastest lap was near-as-makes-no-difference a full second faster than Derek Wolthoff’s in the second place Makes & Models Huracan.

The GTSU and SU competitors were ridiculously fast for being in the rain.  The Thunder group races are going to be bleeding speed from every pore this season, and we can’t wait to see what happens when these guys are let loose on the Outer Loop of Full Track!

The Only Place With More History is a Library

by Michael Chandler

Miller Total Performance Museum Michael Chandler-1

I’m willing to say that The Miller Total Performance Museum had more racing history per square foot than any other auto museum.  Why?  Because #1 it was tiny, #2 it had one of the Daytona Coupes, #3 it had so many early Cobras, #4 it had Shelby Mustangs galore, and #5 it had one of every generation of GT40, including one of the first cars (ever!) to wear the iconic Gulf Oil livery.
