NASA Utah Round 3: We’re Drowning in Z’s

by Michael Chandler

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-7

There were fifteen entries in Spec Z on Saturday.  15!  The other Lightning group classes, combined, had eighteen cars.  It’s safe to say that we’re drowning in Spec Z’s.  Anyway, on to the coverage!  And let’s begin in Spec Z, where Arthur Golebiowski was fighting off four other drivers for the top spot in the championship.  None of the four drivers, nor Arthur, took the win.  It was James Burke who won the day.  Yes, James Burke and that delightful accent of his took P1 in class and overall in the group.  Yeah, I called his accent delightful.  Have you heard him speak?  Best accent on the grid!

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-13

In the next largest spec class, Spec Miata, Bond, Chris Bond took home another gold medal.  He’s still holding to the top spot in class, but Matt Williamson is still hot on his heels.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-8

And in the loneliest spec class, Spec Boxster, Mark Boschert turned some solid laps.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-10

We got some 944 Spec action!  Samuel Kapp held off Otto Silva and took home the win in the all Porsche class.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-11

Nathan Rohner took home another win in PTBrrappp.  Seriously, this thing was shooting fire going into turn 1.  Someone join him!

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-9

Todd Green, in the mighty Paul Mitchell, ran away from Randy Cummings in PTE.  Here we see Todd next to Dave Dingman, 4th in Spec Miata, going into turn 1.  Todd, or at least Paul Mitchell, took home the win in TTE as well.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1

Jeff and Blake had a new running mate in GTS3!  It was Bob Boileau, in a BMW Z4!  Good job Bob, solid work.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-12

I don’t know why, but I have this weird urge to insert an H into Tom Rogers’s name.  Call him Thom.  Don’t know why.  Anyway, Thom and his BMW took the win in GTS2, a square 26.159 seconds ahead of Chris Haunold and his Porsche.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-16

Somebody buy a BRZ and challenge Trever Pope.  He’s alone in TTD, and could use a friend.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-18

Darin Beaudoin and his dirty, drifty Miata grabbed the TTB win.  If anyone is getting sick of me calling S2000’s Miatas, I have bad news for you: I’m not stopping.  AND NEITHER IS DARIN!!!! MAUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-19

James Pasquier piloted the Porsche of my dreams to a win in TT3 over some BRZ’s, and a friendly guy in a Subaru.  Seriously James, I want your 911 or a reasonable facsimile!

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-6

Alex Whetman and the Focus of Doom, which I did not strap a camera to, came out of wherever it is they hide and took the TT2 victory of Shawn Murphy, his new flares, and his weird desire to go off-roading.  We’ll hunt down the elusive Alex and stick a camera on the Focus at Round 4!  Or whenever.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-17

Jordan Priestly was out and about in the 2016 Camaro development mule.  He then decided to DQ that car, and jump in Michael Eifling’s Corvette.  And in doing so winning TT1.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1-2

We finally come to TTU, which was a bit different than usual.  As you can see, this isn’t Wade Hall’s Mustang, nor is it the Makes & Models Super Trofeo Huracan.  This is, however, Brendon Stewart, and it is a Makes & Models car.  It also was the fastest TTU car of the day.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-2

Speaking of 996 Porsche 911’s: Darrell Troester collected a GTS4 win with his 996 Cup Car!

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-3

In ST3, and *just* in front of whatever CA Sport car was coming out of Release, was Frank Gannett.  He brought home another win in the black Ford Performance Racing School Mustang.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1-3

JR Smith piloted him E36 BMW to a solid ST2 drive, which got him a gold medal.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-14

George Smith ran his Corvette in ST1 trim, which meant he was down on power.  Normally this wouldn’t be much of a problem, except ST1 had a five car field.  And Bob did some more aero modifications to the Snickers car (that’s a story in and of itself).  Despite all of that, George took home the win!

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-15

Les Long broke out his 997 Cup car, which I’ve heard rumors about.  Rumors that make me want to know more about the car.  Anyway, Les and the pirate Porsche took home the SU class win.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-4

Mckay Snow, and his determined look, claimed a GTSU victory.  Frankly, it would’ve been more surprising if he didn’t win.  The big story in GTSU is the lack of the Makes & Models Huracan ST.  Unfortunately, the Huracan met the wall during an earlier practice session.  Things were broken, but Derek was ok.  The car?  Well, that’s TBD.  When I saw it, it didn’t look so bad.  Then again, I grossly underestimate how bad things look to repair.

And that’s that.  Another NASA Utah weekend in the books.  Join us for the next race weekend, June 10-12.  They’ll be on the West track, where things can get interesting.

Where They Stand: Time Trial Standings

by Michael Chandler

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 TT Winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-4

Now it’s time to take a look at the Time Trial standings.  There aren’t nearly as many classes in TT, but there are plenty of close battles.  Like TTE!  Paul Mitchell, the most fabulous Miata of them all, sits atop the class with Tyler Nisonger 40 points behind.  How is this going to shake out?  Well, back in third is Ben Lamberson.  He’s 70 points down, but definitely not out.  It’s a long season, and that’s not an insurmountable gap.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 TT Winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-7

Trevor Pope is sitting atop TTD, riding high on three straight wins.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Saturday Winners Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -5

TTC didn’t have a single competitor last weekend, so Tom Rogers is still leading the group.

NASA Utah TTB Points Leader Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1

New Miata owner, and fella with a jaunty last name, Darin Beaudoin is sitting atop TTB, with Adam Hurdman 100 point behind him in second place.

NASA Utah TT3 Points Leader Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1

One of the BRZ/FRS drivers to step up to TT3 was Andy Moench, and he finds himself in first place.  Another driver who made the jump is Mike Bratsch, who currently sits in second place.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 TT Winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-3

Shawn Murphy and his “street car” are 45 points ahead of the Makes & Models 911 GT3.  The 911 is tied with the Pink Ribbon Racing BRZ, which is getting some fresh new rubber.  Shawn is throwing on some new sideskirts and fender flares for the next round, so this weekend is going to be interesting.

352A1254 (Medium)

David Gilliland and his bright orange Viper are leading the way in TT1.  Nice to see that bright, menacing thing running around and winning.

Rainbow (Medium)

At the end of the rainbow is an Italian/German race car driven by a collection of talent that used to drive a German race car.  That would be Makes & Models and their shiny new Huracan ST.  They have a 20 point lead over Wade Hall in TTU.  If you were to take in to account the wins Makes & Models scored when they took their old R8 LMS out for Round 1, they’d have a 220 point lead over Wade.  Regardless, Makes & Models is still learning the car while Wade is sharpening his driving skills.  This one could get interesting.

Be Bold, B Mini

by Michael Chandler

ISS 2016 CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-160

No, that title doesn’t contain a typo.  There was a Mini sporting a Honda B series engine.  And then some kids said that it was made of plastic, and I wanted to die.  But this sin’t about them.  This is about the tiny car, with the small motor, and an abundance of moxy!

ISS 2016 CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-162

The adorable little motor has four tiny velocity stacks protruding from four individual (probably fun sized!) throttle bodies.

ISS 2016 CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-164

Inside there’s… what is that on the left?  Is that a leg?!?

ISS 2016 CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-163 ISS 2016 CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-161

As you can see, the nose pops off for ease of access to the entirety of pretty much everything ahead of the firewall.  The fore section of the car can be placed at the rear of the car so as to create a nice photo opportunity.  We salute you, whoever you are!  And your diminutive pocket rocket too.

BEHOLD! A Van!

by Michael Chandler

ISS 2016 CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-136

Do you need to be deep in that VIP life, but also need to haul around kids, groceries, and other whatnot?  Well as the fine folks over at VANkulture have shown, vans can be gangster as hell.  And one such gangster van showed up to ISS.

ISS 2016 CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-3 ISS 2016 CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-2

This Honda Odyssey was sporting some Junction Produce neck pads for the driver and passenger, and a Recaro baby seat for… well, I’m assuming a baby.  Hanging from the wide mirror is a Tsuna know, and hanging from the OE rear view mirror is a Fusa knot.  Inside is some serious JDM hotness, but what about the outside?

ISS 2016 CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-1 ISS 2016 CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-137

Mmmm!  A set of WEDS Kranze LXZ wheels set off the exterior.  You don’t have to roll in a Lexus or an Infiniti to be VIP, sometimes you just need a van and a desire to let your inner gangster out.

The Big Bad Wolf

by Michael Chandler

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Thorne Big Bad Wolf CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-7

The first NASA Utah event saw a hot shoe pro driver show up.  The driver was Robert Thorne, who was last seen driving for K-Pax Racing in Pirelli World Challenge.  Unfortunately we missed the K-Pax team last year when the series stopped in Utah, and hopefully they’ll be back this year with their McLarens.  Since we missed him last year, we got some photos of him and his machine this year.  Well, not so much of him, but of his machine at least: his boosted Honda S2000.  How do we know that it’s boosted?

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Thorne Big Bad Wolf CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-4

He’s either all about on track air conditioning, or that’s an intercooler designed to handle some serious boost.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Thorne Big Bad Wolf CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-2

The car has massive tires on all four corners.  315’s tend to poke out *just* a hair.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Thorne Big Bad Wolf CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-6 NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Thorne Big Bad Wolf CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-1

Big, sticky tires and copious amounts of boost require a bit of assistance to be useful, so there’s a massive rear wing and splitter.  And the headlights are pretty sweet too.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Thorne Big Bad Wolf CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-8 NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Thorne Big Bad Wolf CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-9

The interior received some minor upgrades.  Nothing crazy, just some Racetech Seats, a set of harnesses, a new shift knob (heh), and a MOMO steering wheel.  Marvel at it’s awesomeness!  And marvel at this!
