They say rain is the great equalizer, and on Saturday the old saying was put to the test.  There were those who came prepared, like Todd Green and Derek Wolthoff who had proper rain tires, and those who weren’t, which was the Spec Z field.  Rumor is that they went and raided local tire shops for anything better than the dry weather tires they all had.  One driver in the group was even on Blizzak snow tires!  Despite very few people being prepared for the weather, I was one of the many who weren’t prepared for the cold and driving rain, there was some serious racing going on with championship implications attached.  We’ll start off in the Lightning group, where the usually quick Z cars were slowed by the downpour.

Todd Green, on a set of Hoosier rain tires, led the field in his Pro Touring E Miata.  He took the overall win, and class win (by 58 seconds!), with Matt Guiver in second in the Paul Mitchell Miata.  Ole Paul was on the Toyo rain tires Todd used in the very wet qualifying session.  Matt’s performance has, in some minds, proven that he is some sort of wizard.  The podium was rounded out by Allan Anderson, who was in first for the championship.

Spec Z had Paul House putting together a solid race and claiming a well deserved victory over the normally strong, if not dominant, Arthur Golebiowski.  The Lightning qualifying session was relatively dry, but by the time the start of the race rolled around the heavens had opened up and unleashed a torrent.  Paul had the stock 350Z wheels on, which lead me to believe he had at least the OEM tires on for the race.  Arthur was on the Enkei RPF1 wheels he has used for every other event, so it’s safe to assume he was out on tires that weren’t best suited for the conditions.

Spec Miata was taken by Chris Bond, with David Sherman and Joe Schubert following behind.  Unfortunately the rain spread the field out quite a bit, with a little over twenty seconds separating first and second, and second and third.  McKay Snow was noticeably absent, probably because he was preparing to make his debut in the IMSA Cooper Tires Prototype Lights Powered by Mazda at Road Atlanta.

And good guy Gus Stribakos threw some different wheels and tires on his Porsche, went out and turned some laps.  In doing so he solidified his GTS3 title, and so we say congratulations Gus!

Terry Binner officially secured his Super Formula title by taking both of the races on Saturday.  He didn’t have to run either of the races in their entirety, going in to the weekend he had a dominating 380 point lead over Steve Burns.

In Formula, Steven Costello had to score points to hold off any challenger to his season title.  Troy Duffin, third place in the championship standings, took both of the races on Saturday, but (at least according to my rudimentary math) could not overcome the 270 point deficit.  However, he did leap over Chris Taylor for second in the standings.

TT was a little different.  Greg Valdez stepped up to TT1 from TT2 in not the best of conditions for Lelantos.  Still, the Ziptie Dynowerks sponsored STi put forth a solid effort and finished second.  Derek Wolthoff took the Makes and Models Audi R8 LMS for two sessions, and proceeded to win the class.  Both Greg and Derek ended the day as champions though.  Derek in TT1, and Greg in TT2.

Brendon Stewart made a brief return to TT2, and came in second to David Bradshaw.

Rhett Panter made his second appearance of the season and took TTU in his Acura with all of the downforce.

TTE had David Sherman and Joe Schubert battling for the win for the day (David won) with Jeb Brown and Ben Lamberson continuing their championship fight, with Jeb squeaking out a third place finish ahead of Ben by less than half of a second.

Chris Bond ran one session, and claimed the TTD victory.

Thunder had four classes.  One massive class (ST3) and three one man classes (GTSU, ST2 and SU).  Brendon Stewart was the lone ST2 competitor, as he has been most of the season, and by winning (again) solidified his season title.  Derek Wolthoff ran against a strong field of nobody, made only two (that I know of) off track excursions and won GTSU.  And Joe Sim, of Turbo Lab fame, trotted out his NSX and claimed the SU win.  I really wish it wasn’t cold and rainy, because I would have loved to see the NSX turn some truly screaming laps.

Now ST3 was where the action was.  Travis Tidball and Cary Wilson had only 16 points between them in the championship standings.  So it was Corvette vs. Corvette, and it didn’t look too promising for Cary.  Going in to turn 1 he looked slow and did get the back end loose at the exit.  Travis looked like he was ripping through everything, driving like a hero.  BUT looks can be receiving.  Cary took the win in dominating fashion, holding off Travis for another day.  Cary’s win was bolstered by Alex Whetman (third in the championship, spitter of fire from his Focus of Doom) coming in third, lessening the dent Travis put into Cary’s lead.

And so there we have it.  A rainy, generally miserable day yielded some champions from the diminished fields.  Sunday was a much better day, and more people showed up then.  I wasn’t one of them, because I went to a car show.  Oh well, I will be at the season ending Enduro on October 18.  Not gonna miss that, and I sincerely hope you don’t either!

Gumball WRS: A Study In Cool

What makes a cool car?  I heard someone say that “the scene” considers a car cool if it’s lowered and has wheels on it.  Others think cool is a full on race build, with street legality and budgets thrown in the trash with the stock struts.  And others think if it isn’t adorned with the rarest of the rare it’s a waste of time.  And it has to be daily driven, or else why build it? David Arellano’s 2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS is low, and on a rare set of wheels.  It has the heart of a WRX, and enough power to embarrass some people’s dedicated track day toy.  And it sees regular street duty.  If this isn’t cool, then I don’t know what is anymore.

The search for his “Gumball” began three years ago.  While biting into a sandwich, he was bitten by the urge to spend a large amount of money on a car.  After mulling over such reliable, and easily modified chassis such as FD RX-7s and twin turbo 300ZXs, David finally settled on the mildly rare 2.5RS coupe.  After looking at two other coupes he finally found the 2000 coupe you see here sitting in the corner of a shop.  The shop was in the process of building the car, and swapping in a 2.0L WRX motor.  With the promise of “prototype” coilovers, David was sold.  After some hemming and hawing by the shop, they finally dropped it off in David’s driveway.  No coilovers, but some blown struts and what would turn out to be a mismatched transmission and rear differential were in the car (which eventually failed), but so was that lovely WRX motor.  Soon after arriving in his driveway, David got to work making this car his own.

First things to go were the US spec lights.  David made a call to Japan and had some OEM clear corner markers and red/clear tail lights sent over, along with some Chargespeed clear bumper markers and clear signal lenses.  With the scourge that is amber lighting removed and banished to the land of wind and ghosts, it was time to address some other visual cues.  After running through a Bugeye WRX lip, and a Bakemono replica of a JDM V5/6 STi lip, David finally settled on something that is no longer in production: Orciari 1 piece front lip.  Sitting above the Italian made lip, are his OEM fog lights which were hiding behind the OEM fog light covers.  Out back there’s a purple Rallytech tow hook, and a set of Honda Accord spats.  According to David they were easier to install than his OEM JDM spats, and they look better.  He’s also sporting rolled and pulled fenders, because low car problems (the tires were munching the fenders before the rolling and the pulling) and also because wheel whore.

I use that last term lightly.  Having a garage full of Rotas and other OEM whatever make you drive wheels, makes you a wheel street walking hooker.  Having the stuff David has had makes you a wheel high class escort.  The streets aren’t littered with Volk CE28Ns or Work Emotion 11Rs, and coming across a set of Volk C-Ultras isn’t as easy as walking to the store.  He’s had the CE28Ns and the Works, and the C-Ultras are being repaired (they were in pretty rough shape) and custom center caps are being designed.  Enough about the past and the future, let’s talk about the present.  Specifically these 17×9 +38 Desmond Regamaster Marquis Promadas.  An exceedingly rare, Russian made wheel.  Normally you see Regamasters on Hondas, and while that’s not terribly unusual (but still cool, so if you’re doing that keep doing that) seeing them on a Subaru is VERY different.  Wrapped around the wheels are a set of Achillies ATR Sport tires, measuring in at 205/40.  Also of note, he’s running some adapters to make the wheels work.  They’re 15mm 5×100-5×114, and they’re made by a local company called Grapple Parts.

To achieve his stance David had to not only throw on coilovers, but things that allow him to make suspension adjustments.  The coilovers are BC Racing BR series coilovers with camber plates fore and aft.  For more camber adjustment, he is employing OEM camber bolts up front, and Eibach’s in the rear.  Joining the OEM camber bolts in the front is an OEM WRX swaybar, while an STi sway bar joins the party in the rear.  Also back there are some Cobb end links.  Back to the front, and in the engine bay, is a Cusco Type ST strut tower bar.  And speaking of the engine bay…

Here it is, in all its glory!  There is the afore mentioned WRX swap, which came from a 2004 WRX.  No longer is the wrong transmission behind the motor, a 2006 WRX transmission has taken its rightful place on the back end of the motor.  Between the motor and transmission rests an Exedy light weight fly wheel, and stage 1 clutch.  For enhanced shifting pleasure there are Kartboy shifter bushings, and a stainless steel clutch cable has been installed.  Holding the transmission is a STi Group N mount.  Rigged Performance performed an internal stub axle conversion and a 2001 2.5RS 4.11 final drive conversion to pair with the 2001 2.5RS viscous limited slip differential.  Bracing that rear differential is a Laile Beatrush rear differential brace.

The motor has been hepped up on goof balls accentuated by digging through the massive Subaru parts bin, and picking up quality aftermarket pieces.  The OEM supplied parts are a VF39 turbocharger, top mount intercooler, and 565CC fuel injectors all from an STi.  The aftermarket bits are a K&N Typhoon intake, a no name one piece header and up pipe, an Invidia Bellmouth downpipe, and a Cobb cat back exhaust.  There’s also a Hallman Pro manual boost controller, which helped Jason Cleverly of Cleverly Tuned tune the car to make 286 horsepower and 240lb/ft of torque at 18psi of boost. Prettying up the bay are a Cusco turbo heat shield, Rallytech fuse box cover and radiator shroud, and a Beatrush alternator shroud.  The engine bay has been semi-wire tucked, and the battery is now in the trunk.  The coolant reservoir is now hiding in the fender and the A/C has been ditched all together.

The interior has also received its share of JDM goodies.  JDM STi pedals and Type-RA front seats have been installed, along with a Nardi Torino steering wheel, Splash steering wheel hub and Omori boost gauge.  The Beatrush Duracon shift knob sits on a stock length shifter, which has a Zealous Interiors blue suede shift boot with cherry blossom red stitching.  The shift boot matches the emergency brake boot.  Black WRX carpet and STi floor mats have come to rest at the bottom of the passenger cabin, and the door panels have been recovered in blue suede.  All the lighting is LED, and tunes come courtesy of an Alpine deck, which has an ipod cable weaving out of sight through the center console.

Former Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart is famously quoted as saying “I know it when I see it” in regard to hardcore pornography.  Cool is definitely subjective, but when you see it, you definitely know it.  Will there be a unanimous consensus on what is cool in the automotive world?  Probably not, but if there is ever an argument to be made for it, I shall submit David’s Impreza as my exhibit A.

Track Car in the Making: Tommy’s WRX

Track Car in the Making“Race car” is a phrase that gets thrown around a lot these days. Most people start with the motor and then ask the questions later of why they went off course while understeering through a turn. It’s not always about power. Case in point is some of our past feature cars that race regularly and aren’t surpassing 600whp or even 300whp. But the right combination of parts can make a worthy contender.

WRX splitter and canardsTommy brought his Bugeye home one day with the sole intention of making it a streetable race car. It needed to take him to and from the track, but allow him to have fun once he got there. If you couldn’t tell from the first paragraph, he’s largely left the motor alone to make it reliable. Even his future plans are simple and comprised mostly of OEM parts. The only additional power-adders are an HKS Hi-Power Exhaust and custom catted down pipe. Most of the attention was turned to aerodynamics and suspension.

tommywrx-2Now if you ask what Tommy’s favorite part of the car is, he’ll be torn between the broadway mirror(to see those he just passed) or the Voltex rear wing. This was something he was looking forward to for some time. It stands tall to get some clean air as he heads into the high-speed sweepers at Miller Motorsports Park. Helping with the downforce up front is a set of FUNKtion Aero canards and front splitter underneath a Prodrive front lip. Clearing the air from underneath the car is a Voltex-replica rear diffuser.tommywrx-3 As the car gets forced down, it sticks to the line with a set of Enkei RPF1 17″ wheels wrapped in sticky Toyo Proxes R1R tires. Tires are part of the equation, but the suspension is handled by BC Racing BR coilovers and seemingly pointing at the Whiteline catalog and saying “I’ll take all of it”. This was actually planned out more thoroughly than that as his main sponsor Nip N’Tuck Performance went over what he needed. This includes a set of Whiteline Sway Bars front and rear, Whiteline Anti-Lift Race kit, and Whiteline endlinks. tommywrxThe interior is kept functional with a Momo steering wheel, Sparco Pro2000 seat and Takata harness, Autopower 6-point roll cage, and stripped out rear seats and sound deadening. Stopping is currently relegated to Hawk HPS brake pads, but will soon be upgraded. Putting together this car has made it solid on the few shakedown runs he’s made with the car. It will really be tested this upcoming month as he begins his NASA High Performance Driving Events to get a race license. Look for this car in our track coverage soon.

The Black Pearl

In the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, the Black Pearl is the fastest ship in the Caribbean and is “nigh uncatchable”. This 1996 Subaru Impreza coupe ruled the unlimited AWD class in Lap Battle, and for a while was battleship gray. The next season it returned in its black and gold trim, and was even quicker. And then it disappeared…

It wasn’t destroyed or taken off to rule other tracks, it just went into Zane’s garage. See, Zane sells cars and to really make a living doing that, you need to be there on Saturdays. Lap Battle happens once a month on a Saturday. Push came to shove, and Zane decided to sling cars, learn his family’s business and generally make a living instead of burn expensive gas and shred expensive tires. During this time the car sat in the garage, battery attached to a trickle charger, waiting to be unleashed.

Pirate ships like the Black Pearl were small ships either bought or captured and then outfitted with arms. This Impreza is no different. The beating heart of the Pearl started with a Rallispec short block stuffed with Cosworth main and rod bearings, and 9.2-1 pistons on Manley H Beam rods. The heads are packed with Cosworth cams (274 intake and 278 exhaust), valves and high RPM springs and retainers.

A built motor like that NEEDS a proper turbo set up and fuel system to truly fly, and the Pearl is no exception. An Ultimate Racing GT3076 rotated turbo kit sits at the center of the setup, with a Tial 44mm wastegate hanging off of the turbo. That big turbo pushes air through a giant TurboXS front mount and into the engine. A Walbro in-tank fuel pump gets the fuel to the 850cc Deatschwerks fuel injectors, but when things get serious, the fuel in the Sard surge tank gets set to those injectors by a 280lph fuel pump.

After hearing that list you might be thinking this whole set up is run by AEM or MoTEC, but it isn’t. A Cobb ACCESSPort v2 runs this, and runs it well.

Backing this setup is a complete 2004 STi 6 speed drivetrain because it is rather stout. Other stout things are the Tein Super Racing coilovers, the Whitline swaybars and lateral links, and the APR extended wheel studs. The Michelin slicks are stout and meaty as are the StopTech 355x32mm ST40 brake kit in the front and the STi Brembos in the back, both of which are filled with Hawk DTC70 pads.

All of that is serious stuff, and you might be thinking the wheels are Volks or Weds Sports, but you’d be wrong. Those gold 18×10 wheels are Rota SVN-Rs. Yes, those cheap wheels you see blasted on forums for being fake and see destroyed in photos are on this 400+ horsepower race car. A car that laps the 3.08 mile outer course at Miller Motorsports Park in two minutes and 4.7 seconds!

The Impreza coupes are the lightest Imprezas ever brought to the U.S. This one has been lightened slightly. EVERYTHING was ripped out, and eight things went back in. A Sparco Circuit seat, harness, and steering wheel went in. An STi dash and cluster replaced the old ones, and DEFI gauges went in the dash. A Beatrush division panel sits where the back seat used to be and an Autopower six point roll cage provides moar safe.

Much like the ship it gets its name from, this car is purpose built for speed. There aren’t any frills outside, unless you consider that huge APR GTC300 wing a frill. The Seibon carbon fiber doors, hood, trunk lid and front lip shed weight. The 22b widebody kit and rear fender flares allow for the fitment of those massive wheels and meaty slicks. The custom front canards and rear diffuser help channel air in the right direction to allow this car to run as fast as possible.

At the end of this week this car shall make its return to competition. It shall rise from the depths of the garages of Miller, but Zane doesn’t need to make a pact with a dead man to do so. All he has to do is open the garage door, fire her up and take her out.

The Happy Couple: a pair of Subarus

Couples do things together. Some buy matching outfits, others try to take an interest in the other’s hobby, and some build a pretty bad ass pair of Subarus. I’d like you to meet Sally and Shawn, and they are the latter.

Sally and Shawn have been coming out to Lap Battle from Wyoming for a little while now, and we’ve been able to see their cars change with each event. Sally drives the hawk-eye, while Shawn drives the blob-eye. While they do race together, they’re technically not in direct competition with each other; because, they’re in different classes. Sally has a legitimate car Shawn has a legitimate race car. Allow me to demonstrate the differences:

Under the hood Sally has a lot of bolt-ons you’d see on cars that never see track time. COBB Tuning intake and SF intake bring fresh air to the bigger VF39 turbocharger. A STi top mount intercooler (fitted with a Forge Motorsport blow off valve) helps cool down the pressurized air, while an Invidia cat-less downpipe channels the spent gasses into a Greddy Ti-C catback exhaust. A COBB Accessport watches over the whole operation, as a Walbro 255lph keeps the two and a half liter mill with all the fuel it needs and a Saikou Michi oil catch can gathers all the gunk and keeps it from screwing things up.

Shawn has gone with a different plan: build it better. He tore into the engine and tossed the OEM pistons, rods and bearings with offerings from Manly and ACL respectively. 1000Cc injectors from Injector Dynamics and a Bosch 044 fuel pump replace the smaller factory units, while the TGVs have been outright deleted. An 83mm KS Tech cold air intake feeds the AMS 900X rotated mount turbo kit. The compressed air flows through an APS front mount intercooler and into a ported and polished throttle body. Keeping the inside of this monstrous motor cool are a Koyo radiator, a custom oil cooler and an AquaMist water-methanol injection system. An Integrated Engineering surge tank ensures that there won’t be a fuel starvation issue, while a Fluidamper makes sure the engine doesn’t shake itself apart.

Harvey Epstein, of TheBoostCreepLTD, tuned both cars. Sally made 267awhp, while Shawn (who did everything except the tune and engine build) made 453awhp. What’s almost 200whp between boyfriend and girlfriend?

 

Both Shawn and Sally are on coilovers: Shawn with his BC Racing BR’s and Sally with her TEIN Monoflexes. Sally is packing a TEIN front strut tower bar to help stiffen up the front, and a Cusco piece out back to do the same. Kartboy subframe lockdown bolts and a COBB rear sway bar round out the chassis aids Sally has chosen to employ. Shawn is rocking a set of Whiteline swaybars, along with their Anti Lift Kit. Kartboy end links have been installed, and the knuckles have been converted to 05 STi units for good measure. Both cars had their race alignments and corner balancing work done at Innovative Garage

At first glance it would appear that the happy couple are on matching wheels, but if you look closer you’ll see that they’re just on similar sets. Shawn’s are a set of Work Emotion CR-Kais wrapped in Toyo RA-1s, while Sally is on a set of Drag DR-31s shod in Nitto NT-01s. Shawn’s are an inch bigger in diameter so as to fit the StopTech ST-60 big brake kit. A set of Carbotech XP12 pads fill the calipers and Motul 600 fluid runs through the stainless steel lines. Quantum brake ducts keep the massive brakes as cool as they can. Sally’s set up is no slouch: Hawk HPS pads out back are in the OEM calipers, and HP Plus pads are in the Brembo calipers she sourced in the front. Castrol SRF brake fluid provides the hydraulic boost needed to reel the car in.

Both cars have carbon fiber hoods, splitters and big wings; however, while Sally is rocking a STi rear wing, Shawn has a massive Kognition piece. Shawn’s hood is a Kaminari unit without a hood scoop (because of the front mount you see) and Sally’s is a Seibon OEM style piece, complete with big hood scoop (because of the top mount you see). Sally has an APR splitter and FUNKtion canards whereas Shawn has a custom splitter (made from a “Welcome to Wyoming” sign) and no canards.

Both interiors feature Sparco seats (Pro 2000 for Shawn, Evo for Sally) and six point harnesses. A set of Autometer gauges inform Shawn of all that is important, while an Innovative Motorsport vent mounted boost gauge tells Sally about how boost she’s cramming in to her motor.

 

They say that the couple that plays together, stays together and coming out to the race track once a month definitely counts as playing in my book. We look forward to seeing them at Lap Battle, and where ever else we run into these crazy kids and their pair of Subarus

Lately we’ve traveled to Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Georgia, and Miller Motorsports Park and these are some pics from those trips. We’ve got more on our plate though, and plenty more pics to come, so expect more of these photo-only posts. Repeat Offender: 2003 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS

You may remember that in the first issue of CAM we featured a pair of ridiculous Subarus: a 2006 WRX wagon and a 2003 2.5 RS. Since then the Wagon has gone down for some repairs while the RS soldiered on. Shane brought the car out for a late night photo session so we could see some of the changes he’s made in the year and some since we last brought you this car.
