Import Spring Showoff 2016

Another spring, another Import Spring Showoff.  This year the show was massive!  I’m still a little out of it, got there hours before the show opened to slap some stickers on Nik’s Jetta, but I did manage to get the photos edited and uploaded.  Want to see them?  Here you go:

Top of the Line Imports Show and Shine

We covered a Top of the Line Imports meet last year, and it was a good time.  People go the extra mile to get their car ready for the meet and, for most, it showed.  This year’s meet was no different.

This thing really stood out to me.  It’s a Volvo C30 on air!  The C30’s are already handsome little moosen, but put some good looking wheels on one and bag it and it becomes something else entirely.

All the cool kids are bagging their cars, and most of them are not afraid of showing off their tanks and compressors.  I saw a lot of people who ditched the carpet in the trunk in favor of some hardwood.  Nobody had any parquet though…

Someone went down their own path with the “hardwood” idea.  Good for you hockey enthusiast, good on you.

One person decided to buck convention, and not mount their tank on the trunk floor.

More modern cars made up the majority of the vehicles, but some classics came out.  This ’28 Ford Model A, complete with a stained glass rear window.

And there was a Volkswagen Type 181, the Kurierwagen, lovingly known here as The Thing!  It was surfed out, complete with a short board sticking out the back.

And in the shadow of another classic, stood the penultimate piece of classic JDM goodness.

Summer is officially over, that doesn’t mean the meets are; however, bigger meets with hundreds of cars and DJs and pizzas are.  But you can bask in the glow of the pictures on your screen and reminisce about the good times.

Import Spring Showoff 2015

After years of evolution and months of planning, the 2015 iteration of the Import Spring Showoff opened up at the Maverick Center last Sunday.  And much like every year prior, this one saw massive growth.  Over 2000 cars and over 8000 people came to the show!  And in that mass of people and cars there were some seldom seen gems

ISS 2015-51ISS 2015-45ISS 2015-46

Gems like Corbin Lines’s 1986 Dodge Omni GLHT.  Not as highly sought after as the Omni GLHS’s, but still packing all the same goodness, Corbin’s weighs a scant 1980 lbs and makes over 500 horsepower to the wheels!  All that power with that lack of weight makes the car useless on the streets, but a monster on the track.

There were plenty of FD RX-7s in attendance this year, but none quite as wild as this 2JZ swapped example.  Some call this blasphemous, but the big Toyota mill fits so well under the hood of the sleek Mazda.

ISS 2015-28 ISS 2015-71

The matte purpley Scion is packing a nice sized Borg Warner turbocharger, a nice wrap (hence the color) and took home the Favorite Scion award.  The red car is well on its way to becoming a challenger for the award next year, sitting nicely on a set of Work Emotion XD-9s.

Jon Truong’s custom widebody WRX made its debut.  The metal work on the fenders looked amazing, and allows the massive CCW wheels to tuck nicely into the wheel wells.

ISS 2015-4 ISS 2015-149 ISS 2015-150

Lyfe Motorsport brought out the big guns, and the biggest trailer at the show: their massive four car hauler.  Inside the hauler were the two Spec Z cars they prepped in 30 days (!), a 996 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, and their venerable R35 GTR with it’s new wrap from Envision.  In addition to the cars that had to be hauled to the show, Shawn Murphy drove his freshly wrapped STi down from Wyoming and parked it in the booth.

ISS 2015-94

A sea of people and cars filled the enormous parking lot, vendors lined an entire row, and plenty of deserving builds drove home with awards.  It was an impressive show on all fronts, and we can’t wait until next year.

Makes and Models Open House

by Michael Chandler

Over the weekend, our friends at Makes & Models threw open their doors and rolled some of their cars out into the parking lot and held an open house.  They wanted to show off the shop, and let the people know that “Yes there’s an R8 LMS racing with our logo all over it, but we’re so much more than that.”  Indeed they are.

In addition to showing that every Euro is welcome, they welcomed some of the manufacturers of the parts they sell.  Grapple, maker of fine wheel spacers and adapters, brought out their very clean E30 and parked it with Parker Lambert’s bagged A3.  If you’re curious: people did step on his splitter.

Behind the Grapple cars was Integrated Engineering, makers of Audi and VW go fast bits.  They had a selection of intake manifolds on display, along with some suspension pieces and information on their line of Golf R products.  They also had an unassuming E30 BMW hanging out.  Its unassuming looks hid a monster holding a hairdryer.  Just look at that thing!  This little beemer will move.

And finally, NASA Utah had a pop up and were spreading the good word of getting your car on the track.  Parked next to the booth was Ben Lamberson’s 2014 TTE championship winning Audi 90.  Sitting on what’s left of the dash is what I can only assume is his secret to success: Secrets of Solo Racing by Henry A. Watts.  Does this actually help Ben win, and does he pass on these secrets to the drivers he instructs?  Beats me, but there it is.

In the showroom was the TW Racing R8 LMS, and a corporate stablemate.  Speaking of the R8 LMS, did you know that Makes & Models can get you a sweet hook up on Global Motorsports Group parts?  Well, maybe not a “sweet hook up”, but if you want to hop up your Lamborghini, Porsche, Audi, Aston Martin, McLaren, Ferrari or BMW with some top notch parts, here you go.

While most of the action was happening in the showroom and in the parking lot, there was something to see in the shop area.  Up on the alignment rack was this classic Alfa Romeo GTV.  It was just hanging out with some Porsches, being all classic and Italian.

All makes and models were welcomed at the Makes & Models Open House, from Greg Valdez’s red WRX to a C7 Corvette with all sorts of APR goodies.  It was a solid event, complete with booth professionals, and a raffle.  Sad you missed out on a chance to see some ridiculously awesome cars?  Don’t worry!  Next weekend is the Import Spring Showoff, which we’ll talk about later.  In the meantime, enjoy a gallery from the Open House!

RallySport Direct’s Eat, Greet and Swap Meet 2013

by Michael Chandler

Rally Sport Direct Eat Great and Swap Meet Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-9

May 11 was the annual RallySport Direct swap meet.  What started as an opportunity for RSD customers to free up some garage space by unloading parts has turned into a sizable event where you can also meet people and eat some free food.

Rally Sport Direct Eat Great and Swap Meet Michael Chandler CAMautoMag

For the longest time RallySport was synonymous with Subarus and Mitsubishis, but they have since expanded their offerings to include Mazdas and even the new Focus ST has found a home in their stable.

Everything was there for you to ogle, from all out race cars to high dollar exotics (The LFA is an exotic.  Deal with it)

To classics and super stanced vehicles.

Even grocery getters found some love!

All in all it was a gargantuan success.  Multiple parking lots were filled, products were raffled away and most everyone got free food.

Did you miss it?  A tragedy that.  But good news!  There’s a Facebook album with some more photos and it’s only about another year until it comes around again!  Even better news?

Tailored/A2 Meet

by Trent

VIP Lexus LS460 on air
The Tailored crew decided to put on a meet at A2. This was their first meet and it turned out to be a hit. The free pizza didn’t hurt.

[func-shun] Episode 9: Tailored/Aesthetic Squared Meet from [func-shun] on Vimeo.

The sun was scorching, and the inside/outside meet atmosphere was unique, but somehow the inside was even hotter than the outside. Tommy joined me for a short time, but I had to cover all the photos and videos myself, and one usually suffers when I have to do both. So a special thanks to Brent from Turtle Factory for the additional pictures.

This is the beginning of more meets and isn’t the last we’ll hear from Tailored.

Rally Sport Direct Eat, Greet & Swap Meet

by Michael Chandler

It was that time of year for Rally Sport Direct to conquer their street and let their customers, fans, well wishers, and people who wanted pizza to come and hang out.  This is a big draw every year, and thankfully RSD’s neighbors let them use their respective parking lots.  Everything from Hondas to Mazdas to Nissans and even a Chrysler 300C SRT8 came to join the Subaru and Mitsubishi faithful.  Check out the gallery, and check out the meet next year if you’re in town!
