Pirelli Trophy West Comes to UMC

by Michael Chandler

Pirelli Trophy West, formerly Porsche Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA, swung through UMC for the first of their two visits of the year.  I missed out on the Saturday stuff, but I made it there on Sunday.  There were the big boys in the 911 GT3 Cup cars, which sported a healthy field.

And then there was the Cayman GT4 Clubsport field, which by the end of the race had dwindled down to 5 cars.  Still had some good racing though.  Anyway, if you’d like to buy one or several photos from the event CLICK RIGHT HERE!  If not, then enjoy this massive gallery:

PCA Day! Porsche Club Racing

by Michael Chandler

Last weekend was a busy one for the kid: I drove to Nephi for the Sanpete Grease ‘n Grub meet, then I woke up early-ish for Pirelli Trophy West and Porsche Club of America racing.  I’ve barely started on the Pirelli Trophy West photos, but I’ve got the PCA photos done!  IF YOU’D LIKE TO BUY A PHOTO CLICK THESE DIFFERENT COLORED WORDS!

There were plenty of locals out and about.  I think the guys at Air Power broke out everything in the garage, because they had a grip of cars out.  Everything from Al Tiley’s GT3R to some old 996 Super Cup cars.

I climbed atop the sketchy photo stand on the outside of Tooele Turn to get some shots of the drivers heading through the turn during one of their sessions.  When I say sketchy, I mean it’s falling apart, leaning a noticeable amount, and part of the deck has rotted away.  All of that sucks, because it’s a cool spot!  JUST LOOGIT DEM PHOTOS!!! Reward my bravery/stupidity BY BUYING SOME PHOTOS!

There were several classics out, and some were getting downright racy.  The 221 and the 55 had a few instances of side by side corner exits.  It.  Was.  AWESOME!!!!  Nothing is too precious.  Bang doors, leave tire marks on each other, drive like the broke asses, such as myself, would if given the chance!

And then there was this 996.  I swear this 996 was out and about WHEN THIS WEBSITE BEGAN COVERING STUFF AT UMC, THEN MILLER MOTORSPORTS PARK!  Hold on, let’s check the archives…

Damn ancient media hosting platform!  I swear to God it’s been more than 5 years since I’ve seen it.  I know precious little about the car, so if you have any info about it let us know!

And then there was this.  Like I’ve said throughout this post, photos are available for purchase.  Click here to buy some photos!

And now: a gallery

A Porsche 959 Is The Ultimate Craigslist Find

by Michael Chandler

Normally when a Craigslist ad is posted in the CAM staff group chat, it’s something cool but not necessarily unobtanium.  Dan, LeMons correspondent/driver, threw this in, and my God…

What you see here is a Porsche 959.  For those who don’t know: the 959 is an all wheel drive, twin turbo Porsche that was going to be the mark’s Group B entry.  But when the FIA canned the series, they took it to the Paris-Dakar Rally where in 1986 they finished 1-2.  They made a racing variant, the 961, which took first in class and seventh overall at the 1986 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

This is a Komfort version, meaning it’s a road going version.  And as you can see by this interior, it’s as 80’s tastic as your favorite episode of The Transformers.  It only has 6323 miles, and has never been restored according to the seller.

The car comes with everything: records, manuals, the original first aid kit (might not want to trust it, but definitely cool), and even a car cover!  The seller also claims that this was formerly of the Patrick collection in the UK, and received a $100k service from Porsche Classic in Germany, before coming to the US.

If you’ve got a spare $1,250,000, this thing can be yours.  Gotta love the randomness of Craigslist.

The Classics at NASA Utah Round 7

by Michael Chandler

We all know about the 944’s and older 911’s running around during a NASA weekend.  This past NASA round saw a host of modern classics hanging out, and running on track, but there were also some legitimate classics running.  Legitimate classics like this vintage 911

It was in the Lightning group on Sunday, along with Ed Mineau’s 911.  The car was in ST4, and came in dead last, but damn did it make coming in last look good.

What do you when you find out that the car you bought for LeMons won’t pass tech because of the bolt in roll cage?  Well, you take it NASA racing of course!  That’s part of the history of this car.  It also spent some time kicking around the Rocky Mountain SCCA and NASA regions before being dusted off for a potential LeMons run.  When the team saw the bolt in cage, they immediately found something without one.  And the rest is history.

Literally next to the GTI was this BMW 2002, which has seen plenty of track time.  I can’t confirm this, but just looking at it tells tales of track days gone by.  It wasn’t ratty, just well worn.  Like an old baseball glove.  It was refreshing to see a 2002 put through the paces, instead of being treated like it’s made of glass.

Modern Classics in the Paddock

by Michael Chandler

Most of my shots at a NASA Utah weekend come from things happening on the track, and this past weekend was much of the same.  However, there were a ton of awesome cars just hanging out in the paddock.  I mean, all of the cars are awesome, but you don’t usually run across a Ford GT just hanging out.

That was the case here.  I was shooting two other cars (they’ll be in a later post, because they’re legit classics), when I saw a red and white Ford GT out in front of the DXDT garage.  Naturally, I finished what I was doing and then high tailed it over to the early 2000’s domestic supercar.  Al Tiley, driver of the Air Power 911 GT3R, came walking up as I was finishing my shooting.  We had a chat, expressed our enjoyment of Road America, then he hopped in the GT and drove off.  Can’t argue with the man’s taste in vehicles.

Who doesn’t love an early Lotus Elise?  People who have cold, dead hearts.  This adorable little guy was just hanging out, looking like an aggressive guppy.

In addition to sporting some aggressive aero, it was also packing a Honda K-Series motor.  Oh, and it’s also from Idaho.  Pretty sweet.

There was an F30 generation 330i Xdrive WAGON out in one of the HPDE groups.  This made me excited, but not as excited as another 3 series in a different HPDE group.  We’ll get to that one later, but in the wagon’s group was this 911 GT3.

Naturally, I snagged some photos of it.  Then I figured I’d never see it, but it appeared behind the grand stands as I was getting ready to head up into them.  Out hopped the driver, a guy who introduced himself as Knight, and his instructor: Integra hero Tyler Mikesell.  After the race, I came out of the grand stands and ran into Knight.  He said he threw the APR wing on the car because he felt he needed more down force in the rear.
