CAMcast: 2017 Races to Watch

by Michael Chandler

The CAMcast crew managed to survive those last, rough weeks of 2016, and are back in this new year with a new podcast for your ears!

In this episode Dave, Gavin, Brandon, and Me (me being Mike, sorry for all the coughing) tell you what races to watch this year, where to find them, and we ramble on about some other stuff.  It’s mostly the racing stuff though.  Give us a listen!  You can stream the episode here, get it on iTunes, or download it here.

We mention some YouTube channels where you can watch races either live, or after their air date.  Here’s a brief list:

  • WorldChallenge TV, home of Pirelli World Challenge
  • IMSA Official, IMSA on YouTube
  • IMSA.tv, IMSA streaming on their own page
  • NISMO TV, The place to watch SuperGT, and Blanpain Endurance and Sprint races.  Also a bunch of cool Nissan stuff.
  • Climb Dance, a short film of a Peugeot 405 T16 GR climbing Pike’s Peak in the 80’s

And there you have it, more goodness for your ears, and things for you to do during the year.  We’ll be back next week!

Pirelli World Challenge at the Grand Prix of Utah GTS Race 2

by Michael Chandler

PWC 2016 Sunday GTS Race Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-2

The madness that is a Pirelli World Challenge GTS class race has risen and fallen.  This race had all the staples of a great race: close racing, plenty of passes, near misses, and some not misses.  The field, which features everything from the GT4 spec KTM X-Bow up to the almost too powerful Camaro ZL1.  In the end, one driver would rise to the top.  Stand on the highest step, and therefor have the strategic advantage in the champagne spraying that happens at every podium event.  That man is Scott Heckert.

PWC 2016 Sunday GTS Race Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-3

Scott, in the lone Sin R1 GT4, overtook Brett Sandberg (#13 KTM X-Bow GT4) and held off Nate Stacy (#14 Ford Mostang BOSS 302S) at the beginning of the race, and held on to the lead for the rest of it.  A late race full course yellow, brought on by the #29 Ginetta of Harry Gottsacker colliding with the #46 Lotus of Scott Dollahite, cut Heckert’s massive lead down to nil.  However, on the restart, he built back that lead, as Nate Stacy and Brett Sandberg battled each other for position.

What Car Would You Take Racing?

by Michael Chandler

Pirelli World Challenge Ford Grand Prix of Utah day 1 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-87

I HAVE A QUESTION: If I were to hand you the necessary skills and budget, what would be your chassis of choice for sports car racing?  Ask any driver looking for a seat, and they’ll tell you they’ll wheel around in whatever they can get in to.  We’re not asking them.  Unless they’re reading this, which would be cool.  Hello unidentified pro drivers!  Glad to have you along!  Anyway…

This question is directed at us, the laymen.  Those who have an appreciation for racing, but probably couldn’t string together two good laps if our lives depended on it.  If you could suddenly drive like Jan Magnussen, Patrick Long, or someone else of that caliber, AND you had the budget to start and run your own team, what car would you build for your team?  Even though they’re no longer the go to chassis, my pick is going to be the Porsche 911.  Yes, it’s an affront to physics.  Yes, it’s a smashed Beetle.  BUT, Porsche has been atop the podium at the 24 Hours of Daytona 18 times, 17 times at both Le Mans and Sebring.  They have a great support system, from what I’ve seen, and odds are you wouldn’t be the only idiot new team out there in a 911.  It’s a tried and true platform, one that has been successful and continues to be.

So what’s your platform?

Pirelli World Challenge is Coming Back to Utah

by Michael Chandler

Pirelli World Challenge Ford GP of Utah Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-143

In August we’ll see the return of Pirelli World Challenge, thanks to Tooele County choosing to let Utah Motorsports Campus manage the facility formerly known as Miller Motorsports Park.  New for this season is Sprint X, which are a series of extended sprint races and have mandatory driver changes.  UMC will be playing host to rounds 3 & 4 of the inaugural Sprint X season, in addition to GT/GTA, GTS, GT Cup, and TC/TCA/TCB racing.
