Where They Stand: NASA Utah Race Group

by Michael Chandler

Chris Haunold GTS2 leader Round 3 NASA Utah Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1

As we’re on the eve of Round 4, I feel it’s a good time to see where everyone is in the championship race.  Starting in GTS2, we have Chris Haunold 175 points ahead of Ed Mineau and 185 ahead of Tom Rogers.  Chris has the benefit of running five of the six races, while Tom and Ed have only run in six combined.

Jeff Burton GTS3 leader Round 3 NASA Utah Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1

GTS3 is a much tighter race, at least after three rounds of action.  Jeff Burton is hanging on to a 5 point lead.  Right behind him is Blake Troester, and right behind him is Mark Reichman.  A mere ten points separate first from third.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-2

GTS4 is…  Well, it’s not pretty.  Darrell Troester is running away with the class, up 210 points on Byron Smith.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-1

Russ Timmons is still the one, and only, man to beat in GTS5.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 3 Michael Wells CAMautoMag-39

And sitting atop the top GTS class, GTSU, is McKay Snow.  Mark my words, I will get a candid shot of you smiling!

NASA Utah 2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-12

We had a PTF entry at the last event!  It was Joe Sim, in some God awful Ford Escort.  Thankfully Unfortunately, I missed getting a shot of that… vehicle, so look at his NSX instead!

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-9

PTE is being held down by Todd Green in the mythical beast that is Paul Mitchell.  I’m assuming Todd was driving here, more people keep coming out of the woodwork to tell me that they also drive Paul Mitchell.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 3 Gavin Pouquette CAMautoMag-8

Nathan Rohner is the one, and only, man to beat in PTB.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-8

Still only the one Spec Boxster.  Someone join Mark Boschert, will ya
NASA Utah 2016 Round 3 Michael Wells CAMautoMag-18

Chirs Bond has what has to feel like a comfortable lead.  He’s up 75 points in Spec Miata, with Matt Williamson in second.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 3 Michael Wells CAMautoMag-26

Somebody from DXDT Racing is leading in Spec Z.  The #42 car is listed in first place, with Arthur Golebiowski in second, and Tom Kaminski in third.  Fun Fact!: There have been 18 Spec Z’s that have scored points this season.  18!!!!

NASA Utah 2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-3

ST3 is still being run by a driver in one of the Ford Performance Racing School Mustangs.  That driver being Frank Gannett.  He’s up 195 points on Todd, or Matt, or Alex, or maybe some guy named Bill? in the Us Against One Racing M3.

NASA Utah2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1-3

JR Smith is the one, and only, man to beat in ST2.  Wasn’t there a pick-up truck last year?

NASA Utah 2016 Round 3 Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-61

ST1 is where Bob Evans, and the new NASCAR Sprint Cup High Down Force Test Vehicle, holds court.  He’s 175 points clear of George Smith, who won both races last weekend.

Downforce CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-2

And Air Power Racing is… only up 70 points in Super Unlimited?  Math checks out…  Well alrighty then!  Looks like SU could be ridiculously interesting!

There you have it folks, how the racers in the door to door race classes are doing.  Check back in a little bit to see how the Time Trial standings are looking.  If you’re thinking that they’ll look like words and numbers with some pictures mixed in, you’re right!

Where They Stand: Race Group Standings

by Michael Chandler

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Lightning Winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-5

Two rounds down, and a third quickly approaching, now is a good time to take a look at the points standings.  Today we’re going to look at the Thunder and Lightning groups, and we’re going to start in GTS2.  In the above photo, we have the class leader Chris Haunold.  He’s currently 90 points ahead of Ed Mineau, and 110 ahead the other guy in the picture: Tom Rogers.

NASA Utah GTS3 Points Leader Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1

Consistency is key, and in GTS3 Mark Reichman has consistently finished in second place in both of the races he’s run this season.  Fortunately for him, he’s the only driver to run both races. With 180 points, he’s 80 points ahead of both Jeff Burton and Doug Turnquist.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 teasers Old Rotary Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -1

Nathan Rohner is still the only PTB driver.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 TT Winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-4

PTE is a very tight race, with Ben Lamberson nipping at the heels of Todd Green.  Only 35 points separate the two, but I wouldn’t count out Randy Cummings.  He’s a late comer to the class, but he had some solid finishes at the last race weekend.  He’s 205 points down, BUT if Todd and Ben have a few missteps he could be right in this thing.

352A5112 (Medium)

Spec Boxster is a thing, and Mark Boschert is in the lead.  He’s also the only driver in class.  But just look at that Boxster!  Sharp.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Lightning Winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-2

Spec Miata is looking to be a hotly contested class.  Currently less than 100 points separates the class leader, Chris Bond, from 4th place, Craig Shane.  Call the cars whatever you want, but this class is going to be one to watch all season.  Don’t be surprised if we see the top of the class get shuffled several times.

Spec Z is the tightest race in the Lightning group, with Arthur Golebiowski a mere 10 points ahead of Tom Kaminski.  The gap from first to 5th place is 43 points!  That means everyone in the top 5 has to be on their game every race to have a chance at knocking Arthur off the top spot.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-1

Russ Timmons is by his lonesome in GTS5.  Someone buy a 997 911 and join him.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Saturday Winners Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -17

Darrell Troester is barely holding off Byron Smith in GTS4.  The gap was cut from 110 to 10 last race weekend when Darrell no-showed, which let Byron claim an easy class win.  How will this shake out?  Only time will tell!

NASA Utah ST3 Points Leader Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1

Us Against One Racing, comprised by any number of your favorites (Todd Ainsworth, Alex Whetman, Grimace), is clinging to a 5 point lead in ST3.  5 points!!!  That’s currently the tightest race in any of the race group classes!  Figuratively glued to the banana yellow bumper of the M3 is Frank Gannett in the #93 Ford Performance Racing School BOSS 3o2RS, and James Harrell is right behind him in the #87 FPRS Mustang!  This is ridiculous, and also fun.  So let’s keep this up.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-3

J.R. Smith is the lone ST2 driver.  Someone buy a… something and join him.

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 Saturday Winners Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -16

Bob Evans is atop the ST1 ladder in the Snickers Ford Fusion.  We gotta come up with some more sponsors for him.  I want to put at least three back slashes in when I write about his car.  Let’s figure this out, people!

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-5

Super Unlimited is being dominated by the Air Power GT3R’s.  They currently have a 225 point lead, and four consecutive wins in class.

NASA Utah GTSU Points Leader Michael Chandler CAMautoMag-1

And we finally arrive at GTSU, where McKay Snow (smile damnit!) is atop the field that includes a few Super Trofeo spec Lamborghini Huracans and a the other 911 GT3R.  He’s 30 points ahead of the Makes & Models Huracan ST, which may or may not last.  The Makes & Models team is figuring out that Lamborghini, and McKay may get called up for a ride this season.  He’s got the talent, and people need drivers.  Either way, prepare to watch a battle in the unlimited class of the German Touring Series.

CORRECTION: Arthur Golebiowski is currently leading the Spec Z championship, not Chad Aalders.  The article has been changed to show Arthur in the lead.

The Race For The Auld Mug: NASA Utah Round 2 Thunder Results

by Michael Chandler

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-1-2

It’s just not a NASA Utah season without at least one rainy day.  Conveniently,  Mother Nature decided to bring the rain for round two, and so the annual NASA Utah Regatta was under way.  If you’ve been a loyal reader this week, or if you’re not blind, you’ll have come to the conclusion that this is the Thunder Group write up.  These guys, in their high horsepower and high downforce cars, got lucky and qualified in the dry!  But the photo above is from lap one of the race on Saturday, which is clearly not dry.  A some of the field packed it in when the rain began falling at lunch time, which led to a total of ten entrants in the race.  Let’s talk about those brave sailors, and how they finished.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-2

Byron Smith was the lone GTS4 entrant, and completed 11 laps in the rain.  He had a best lap of 2:00.717, and took home a gold medal for his troubles.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-1

Russ Timmons made an appearance in his orange and chrome 997.  Always enjoy seeing that car on track.  Russ was alone in GTS5, so he could have completed less than the 7 he did and still would have taken home a medal.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-6

We had a couple of rookies in ST3!  Both Frank Gannett and James Harrell were both out in Boss 302RS’s from the Ford Performance Racing School.  Frank, in the black #93 Mustang, didn’t do anything meme worthy on Saturday and took home the win.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-3

ST2 was another solitary car field, and that man was J.R. Smith.  He, and the nobles steed that is the E36 M3, ran 11 laps en-route to a class win.

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-5

So, I only heard that Air Power Racing had both of the former Effort Racing 911 GT3Rs, but I needed confirmation before saying something like “holy f&#king ass crackers!  Air Power has both of the Effort cars!”.  On Saturday I got that confirmation, because both cars were out for qualifying.  David Donner went out in the #41 car as the lone Super Unlimited entrant, finished on the lead lap, and ran a 1:43.699!  In the rain!  In one of the widest 911s I’ve ever seen!

NASA Utah 2016 Round 2 Thunder winners CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-4

As mentioned earlier, wonder kid Madison Snow was out in the UIS Huracan.  And since he has significantly more experience in said platform he dominated the GTSU field.  He took the win by 18.603 seconds, and his fastest lap was near-as-makes-no-difference a full second faster than Derek Wolthoff’s in the second place Makes & Models Huracan.

The GTSU and SU competitors were ridiculously fast for being in the rain.  The Thunder group races are going to be bleeding speed from every pore this season, and we can’t wait to see what happens when these guys are let loose on the Outer Loop of Full Track!

So It Rained During The NASA Weekend

by Michael Chandler

Imagine that, rain in the first half of the NASA Utah season.  Who could have imagined that?  Because of the rain we did get to see the effects of the aero packages of the top finishers in the Thunder group.  I didn’t do that great of a job documenting that, but we did get to see something else: the Makes & Models Huracan driving against a contemporary.  That being the brand new UIS Huracan, driven by Madison Snow.

Downforce CAMautoMag Michael Chandler-1

Derek, in his second weekend with the car, ran a 1:28.053 in qualifying (which was dry), and a ran a 1:41.953 in the rain during the race.  Not too bad at all.  Young Madison, on the other hand ran, a 1:40.977 during the race; and a staggering 1:25.477 during qualifying!  How much can one take away from this?  In my opinion: not a lot.  As previously mentioned, The M&M car has only been out for a couple of weekends now, while Madison has spent some serious time racing a Huracan.  Most notably during the Rolex 24.  The biggest thing you can takeaway from this weekend is that the Makes & Models car has the potential to be a monster, and it could very well become that monster before the season is out.  Hopefully Madison will return in the UIS car later this season, so we can see how much progress the Makes & Models team has made.

Not So Super

by Michael Chandler

NASA Utah2016 Round 1 working on the write up Michael Chandler CAMautoMag -3

Here we see the GTSU class UIS Porsche running down the Super Unlimited CA Sport 370Z.  I’m thinking that the Z isn’t as “super” as, say, George Smith’s Corvette or the Air Power 911 GT3R.  Or as unlimited as the UIS Porsche…
