Vehicle Importation: What You Can & Cannot Have

by Michael Chandler

In America you can say pretty much anything, own firearms to your heart’s content, worship what and how you like, and do a whole bunch of other stuff.  However, there are some things you can’t do: yell fire in a crowded building, murder drifters, and have certain cars.

America’s 25 year import law basically says if it’s older than 25 years you can bring it in to the country without much song or dance, but if you wanted something younger (let’s say 17 years old) you’d have to jump through a lot of hoops and still might not be able to get it in the country.  In doing research for something else I cam across a list of vehicles YOU CAN import!  Makes it a whole lot easier when you have a list to refer to.  Some of the vehicles are:

  • 2003 Audi RS6 sedan and wagon (Avant if you want to get fancy)
  • R33 Skyline GT-Rs and GT-S’s
  • 1994-1995 Ford Escort RS Cosworth
  • 1987-1989 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6 16v
  • 00-01 Audi RS4
  • Alpina B12
  • 02-07 Smart ForTwo
  • Early 90’s MB G-Wagen
  • 2000 East Lancs Lolyne Double Decker Bus(!)

So it’s safe to say you can still get some awesome cars younger than twenty-five.  However, the list (which can be found here) includes some random cars that would be…  Well, just take a look and see for yourself:

  • 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier
  • 1994-1999 Cadillac DeVille
  • 2007 Dodge Durango
  • 1993 Chrysler Town & Country
  • 1993 Ford Mustang
  • 1998 Jeep Wrangler
  • 1992 Lincoln Mark VII
  • 1996 Plymouth Voyager
  • 1995-1998 Toyota Avalon
